Project Description:
Replace Bridge 8 on NC 704 over the Dan River in Stokes County. The Area of Potential
Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 306 meters (1,003 ft.) long and 27 meters (90 ft.) wide. No
design plans available.

SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW
Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
The review included an examination of a topographic map, an aerial photograph, and listings of
previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews
at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The bridge is oriented northeast-southwest, but is
considered north-south for this review.

The topographic map (Stuart SE, Va.-N.C.) shows the bridge is located in a narrow river valley.
The NC 704 approaches to the bridge on both sides of the river are located in drainage valleys,
and the landforms on each side of the road on both sides of the bridge are moderate- to steeply-
sloped ridges. There are roads in the southwest quadrant and northwest quadrants. A small
stream runs along the road in the northeast quadrant. "George's Mill" is labeled next to the
northeast quadrant.

The aerial photograph shows that the northwest quadrant is wooded. There may be an old
structure next to the A.P.E. in the quadrant? The northeast quadrant is a narrow strip between
the road and an access road, and a small stream. There is no visible signs of a mill in this
quadrant. The southwest and southeast quadrants are wooded.

A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there are no previously recorded archaeological
sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The A.P.E. is not within any areas that have been
previously surveyed for archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is not within any projects that have
been previously reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO).

Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably
predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE:
The landforms in the A.P.E. have a low potential for archaeological sites. The land in all four
quadrants are moderate to steep slopes.
