The Town of China Grove stormwater program focuses on six "Best Management Practices" or BMPs. The six BMPs are: • Public Education and Outreach • Public Involvement and Participation • Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination • Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control • Post -Construction Stormwater Management • Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping for Municipal Operations What can you do to Prevent Stormwater Pollution? • Do not dump anything down the stormdrains 0 Sediment or mud is one of the top pollutants in NC's waterways. If a construction site is caus- ing muddy streets, storm drains or streams, report the problem. • Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly • Wash your car in the grass instead of the street, or use a carwash 0 Washing your cars in the grass allows the water to soak into the ground. Using a carwash the water goes to a wastewater treatment plant. • Throw trash and cigarette butts in the garbage • Clean up vehicle drips and leaks 0 Oils and metals are harmful to streams. • Consider a rain barrel to collect water 0 Rain barrels and rain gardens reduce the volume of stormwater reaching streams during a storm. Less stormwater equals less stream bank erosion and sediment pollution. • Sweep sidewalks and driveways clean • Keep yard waste out of the Storm Drains 0 Yard waste in the street can wash away and clog storm drains and streams. This could cause flooding. • Pick up your pet waste Pet waste is a large source of bacteria for stormwater. If left on the ground it can be carried by rain or irrigation water into our local creeks and rivers. Want to learn more?
