Dear Sir:
The Corps of Engineers (COE) issued a Section 404 Nationwide Permit 23
(Categorical Exclusion) for the subject project on January 7, 1998. This permit will
expire on January 7, 2000. The replacement of Bridge No. 212 over Saddletree Swamp
on SR 1336 is scheduled to be let to construction December 21, 1999. Project
construction will not be complete during the current permitted time frame. Consequently,
the Department of Transportation (DOT) needs to renew authorization for this work.
Information regarding the project description has not changed since the
distribution of the Categorical Exclusion (CE) in a letter dated June 5, 1997. The bridge
will be replaced south of the existing alignment, along with the associated approaches.
Traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge throughout construction.
The DOT requests that the COE reauthorize this bridge replacement project in
Robeson County under a Section 404 Nationwide Permit 23. Issuance of 401 Water
Quality Certification by the Division of Water Quality is also requested.
