NOTICE OF A DESIGN PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE
HOPSON ROAD (SR 1978) / CHURCH STREET (SR 1980)
RAIL AND ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS
TIP Project No. U-4716
Durham County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold a Design
Public Hearing for the above proposed highway project on Thursday, January 14, 2010,
between the hours of 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm, at the Archie K. Davis Conference Center
(Meeting Rooms A & B), Research Triangle Park Headquarters, located at 12 Davis
Drive, RTP, 27709.
NCDOT representatives will be available in an informal setting to answer
questions and receive comments regarding the proposed project. The opportunity to
submit written comments or questions will be provided and is encouraged. Interested
citizens may attend at any time during the above mentioned hours. Please note: there
will be no formal presentation.
NCDOT proposed rail and roadway improvements include: realignment of the
North Carolina Railroad (NCRR) / Norfolk Southern Railroad (NS) tracks, construction of
a grade separation (bridge) at the Hopson Road intersection with the railroad tracks,
closure of the at-grade railroad crossing at Church Street and the adjacent crossing at
Church Street / Miami Boulevard (NC 54), and extension of Church Street northward to
intersect with Hopson Road.
The purpose of the proposed project is to improve rail and vehicular safety within
the project study area. Realignment of the rail lines will reduce the degree of curvature
and improve rail operations. The grade separation of the railroad tracks and Hopson
Road will improve safety, as well as the closure of the at-grade crossings at Church
Street and Church Street / Miami Boulevard.
A map displaying the location and design of the project and a copy of the
environmental document, the Environmental Assessment (EA), are available for public
review at: the NCDOT Highway Division 5 Office, located at 2612 N. Duke Street in
Durham, the Town of Morrisville -Town Hall, located at 100 Town Hall Drive, in
Morrisville, and at the City of Durham - Transportation Division, located at 101 City Hall
Plaza (4th floor), in Durham.
