SUBJECT: PPG Industries
Davidson County
The letter of April 21, 1983, from Mr. C. M. LeCroy, PPG has been reviewed
by this office. Several discussions between Mr. LeCroy and Mr. Steve Mauney,
Regional Engineer have occurred. A revised limits page is attached and the only
thing which PPG does not agree with is the Fecal Coliform sampling frequency.
The following facts are relevant:
1. This is a Class IV plant accepting domestic waste.
2. In April, 1982, it was reported that 1500 persons were employed
at this plant. Domestic waste could be estimated at 37,500 GPD
(GPCD) , With the plant flow for last 12 reported months at 0.267
MGD this is 1495 of total.
3. The Order and Final Decision (AH WQ 77-17) that the hearing officer
executed on 11/20/78, contained sampling requirements of 3/week
during summer and 1/week during winter for Fecal Coliform at the
effluent and stream locations. Even though this is the correct
frequency for stream sam ling, it is not ppropriate fo the
effluent.

FROM: Forrest Westall
SUBJECT: PPG Lexington, Boron
The Air Quality Section has identified to some extent,
boron 'contamination of terrestrial vegetation around this
facility. As a result, we would like to have the Technical
Services Unit examine the available data on Lexington to see -.
if boron has been detected in the water below the discharge
or around the discharge and to what extent any levels of
boron may be considered of environmental concern. Jennifer
Buzun has performed the modeling for the Lexington facility
and is familiar with the data. It may be appropriate for
her to examine this information and determine if boron is in
fact of any significant concern in the water.
Your assistance is appreciated.
