Summary
The primary pollutant of concern in a publically owned and operated swimming pool is chlorine
or cloramine used a disinfectant. This water, if discharged to a stormwarm drain system or
worse, a body of water, can be toxic to aquatic life.
Target Pollutants
• Sediment
• Nutrients
• Trash
• Bacteria
• Organics
• Oxygen Demanding
Pollution Prevention
Do not discharge water to a street or storm draining if draining a swimming pool.
Discharge to a sanitary sewer if permitted to do so. If water is dechlorinate with
neutralizing chemical or by allowing the chlorine to dissipate for a few days, the water
may be recycled by draining it gradually into a landscape area. Water should be tested for
chlorine before it is released.
• Never clean the pool filter in the street or in a storm drain.
Implementation Status
Pool operations follows these practices. Chlorinated water discharges are made to a sanitary
sewer line. Filters are not cleaned in proximity to storm drains or streets.
