Summary
Streets and parking lots are a significant source of stormwater.
Target Pollutants
• Sediment
• Nutrients
• Trash
• Metals
• Organics
• Oxygen Demanding
Pollution Prevention
• Remove litter/trash on a regular schedule.
• Sweep streets on a regular schedule.
• Remove leaf accumulation on a regular schedule during leaf season.
• When stripping, transfer and mix paints and thermoplastic products away from drain
inlets.
• Use drop clothes under work areas while preparing paint.
• Sweep up thermoplastic grindings — these may contain heavy metals such a lead and
require special handling and disposal. Staff directs this information to contractors.
• Be sure to schedule stripping and other road improvements during dry weather.
• Store concrete and other materials under cover and away from storm drain inlets.
• When mixing concrete, carefully calculate what is needed. If there are hard left over
materials, dispose of them properly. Never dispose of materials in a stream.
• Provide and maintain containment and treatment of stormwater runoff, such as a rain
garden, vegetative open channels, or paved gutter to a storm drain inlet from all paved
surfaces. Never direct pipe stormwater from a parking into a stream.
• When conducting uiliting work in the right-of-way or on a road, use landscaping fabric,
sediment fences, hay bales and other controls to reduce sedimentation and protect the
exposed soils. Reseed/plant the area as soon as possible.
