1 1/2 miles after crossing the Roaring River. In
Roaring River turn left on SR 2329 . The plant is at
the end of the road.

downstream uses: The Yadkin River flows through
agricultural areas downstream of the discharge for
approx 8-10 miles before reaching the Town of
Elkin.

Greater than 990 of flow is industrial. The
wastewater is a combination of process water from
the manufacturing of hardboard siding, . wash water
from cleanup, boiler steam with associated process
water, and water from boiler stock wet scrubber.
C. Prevalent toxic constituents in wastewater:
None known. Effluent bioassays have consistently
shown no toxicity.

Manufacturer of exterior siding from wood pulp with the
addition of resins. The siding is formed with the
addition of heat and pressure.

Existing: Screening, primary clarifier, chemical ,
addition, aeration lagoons, secondary clarifier,
dissolved in floatation unit, rotary sludge thickener,
sludge dewatering unit, land application of sludge,
effluent flow measurement.

PART IV - EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This aerated lagoon treatment system consistently meets
the permitted lbs/day effluent limits even though the BOD
and TSS mg/l concentrations are Very high. The average Con.,.e. 0fictis fo,-
BOD and TSS for the period Feb. 1988 thru Jan. 1989 were 418
mg/l and 1689 mg/l, respectively. At the permitted flow of
1. 0 mgd the plant could discharge a' BOD of 1104 mg/1, and a
TSS of 2538 mg/1 and meet effluent daily average limits.
One of the two aerated lagoons discharges into the
effluent collection box without going through a secondary
clarifier. This lagoon with the addition of "super bugs"
has - , "burnt up" several feet of sludge located in it.
(This according to plant personnel) . Based on the effluent
concentrations reported on self-monitoring sheets, it is
obviously where the solids and BOD ends up.
The domestic waste is tested by a 0 . 0075 mgd package
plant and the effluent discharged into the No. 1
lagoon.
Recent bioassays indicate that the effluent is not
toxic.
It is recommended that ' the permit be reissued.
