Main St. Lexington, NC 27292 Natural Resources Subject: Stormwater Compliance Evaluation Inspection Permit No. NCG020422 Beck Mine at approx. 2990 Rosser Rd, east of Goldston, NC Chatham County Dear Mr. Cunningham: Dee Freeman Secretary . On June 2, 2009, I made an inspection of stormwater program for the Beck Mine facility located as described above. The site is an unattended clay mine, so there was no one there during my visit. I talked to you by phone that day, and on June 22 we met at the RRO office to review your stormwater documentation. Your help was greatly appreciated. All of the permit requirements are being met, so the mine is in compliance. Attached is the inspection checklist. Stormwater is captured by two ponds. The inevitable land disturbance from mining causes transport of red clay into the ponds. We discussed the pros and cons of discontinuing the use of the Faircloth skimmer in an effort to improve water quality discharged from the pond. A later discussion with Land Quality established that use of the skimmer is to continue. If you have any comments or questions about this inspection, please contact me at 919-791-4255 or myrl.nisel a,ncdenngov. Sincerely, Myrl A. In some ways, allowing the ponded water to rise to the level of the overflow riser would make the pond larger and afford longer settling times. But a large storm occurring under that scenario would likely stir the pond and cause the discharge to be of poorer quality than if the skimmer has been in use and had held the pond at a lower level. All in all, it was decided that continued use of the skimmer is the better choice.
