Farrington Environmental ConsuRants Site Plan Pitt County, NC Wilmington, N.C. May 1999 MITIGATION The mitigation consists of the restoration of 300 linear feet of stream restoration between lots 5 and 6 and on the back property lines of lots 4 and 5. The side slopes will be created at a 2:1 ratio. Woody vegetation will be planted along the slopes along with herbaceous vegetation to be established in the stream bottom. GEOMORPHOLOGY Slopes of the restoration area will be at a 2:1 ratio. Two check dams will be installed to dissipate flow thereby reducing erosion and turbidity. The first check dam location will be at the sharp bend of the stream relocation (between lots 5 and 6) and the second will be where the relocated stream ties back into the existing stream on lot 4. VEGETATION The vegetation will be divided into three sections: the upper slope of the stream, the lower slope of the stream, and the stream bottom. The upper portion of the stream slope will be equally planted with Fraxinus pennsylvanica and Carpinus caroliniana. The lower portion of the stream slope will be equally planted with Taxodium distichum and Nyssa sylvatica. Both the upper and lower slopes will be planted with bare root seedlings on even centers at a ratio of 400 trees per acre. The stream bottom will be equally planted with Saururus cernuus, Juncus effusus, and Peltandra virginica. Environmental Consultants Figure 1. Farrington Wilmington, N.C. Site Plan Pitt County, NC May 1999 - August 1999 SUMMARY The owner is proposing to relocated 300 linear feet of a previously channelized stream near Greenville, North Carolina. The relocation of the stream would prevent any additional culvert crossings and would provide a better lot layout for the subdivision. To offset these impacts, the applicant has proposed to restore 300 linear feet of stream within the subdivision. When compared to the current stream conditions, the proposed mitigation will result in an increase of stream function. C MITIGATION The mitigation consists of the restoration of 300 linear feet of stream in Farrington Subdivision approximately 3.5 miles south of Greenville, Pitt County. By relocating the existing stream (Figure 1.), three crossings would not be required (two culverts and one sewer main) and a better lot layout for the subdivision could be achieved. The stream to be relocated runs between lots 5 and 6 and on the back property lines of lots 4 and 5. The side slopes will be created at a 2:1 ratio. Woody vegetation will be planted along the upper and lower slopes of the stream. To obtain the following proposed stream's characteristics, values needed to be placed on the current stream requesting to be replaced. The following method of calculating sinuosity according to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was used: Sinuosity = Stream IengthNalley length Stream Length (feet) Valley Length (feet) Sinuosity Current Stream 300 290 1.034 Reference Stream 4600 4500 1.022 Proposed Stream 305 265 1.151 The reference stream used was northeast of the current stream to be replaced as shown on the U.S.G.S. Greenville S.E. Quad Sheet (Figure 2.) Based on the calculations, the sinuosity of the proposed stream (Figure 3.) exceeds the current and reference stream conditions.
