This is achieved through the implementation of a stormwater prevention plan along with utilizing best management practices, both of which should continually improve and evolve with the business. Narrative: The Carolina Beach Boatyard & Marina's mission is to provide services such as haul outs, pressure washing, bottom painting, shaft/prop work, engine repairs and other boating related repairs to local residents as well as transient boaters; while maintaining the integrity of our pristine natural resources. Carolina Beach Boatyard & Marina has always been and continues to be dedicated to leaving as minimal footprint as possible. We began with the construction of the facility and have continued through to its operation. The bulkheads were constructed to be completely sealed and not allow any runoff or discharge into adjacent waters. To prevent premature failure, hydrostatic loading and water running over the top of the wall, type 57 stone wrapped in a permeable filter cloth and capped with clean fill sand was used as backfill. "Jet Filters" that filter all water through before allowing it to drain out from behind the bulkheads were also installed. A retaining wall was constructed down the north side of the property. This wall prevents any runoff onto the adjacent property. A grass buffer around the perimeter also helps to prevent run off while providing an area for rain water to be naturally absorbed. There is also a concrete pad wash down area where all sides slope to a collection box which in turn supplies the recycling system. The collection box is not only able to capture the water used in pressure washing but also captures the debris associated with it. The box is inspected daily and cleaned weekly unless it is needed upon inspection. The water runs through a filtration system and is reused for future pressure washing. The care and maintenance of this system is key and it is inspected daily. There are also other structural Best Management Practices being implemented on site including an oil contaminant area and a storage building strictly dedicated to paints, solvents, etc. inside a covered and locked structured. Impermeable tarps are placed under each vessel that is being worked on; thereby preventing dust, paint or any other contaminant from coming into contact with the ground. Once all work has been completed the tarp is cleaned and all debris is collected, placed in a sealed container and properly disposed of. Worn tarps are promptly replaced. Another Best Management Practice used is placing bales of hay on the boat ramp when not in use. This helps reduce or eliminate any run-off at the ramp. Other measures include leaving staff on site as monitors during storm events, maintaining grassy areas, storing paints and general ground maintenance to determine if there are any areas of erosion or pollution and correcting if found. Both structural and operational Best Management Practices will continually be updated and implemented to keep our waters clean.
