REGAN Secretary Paul Draovitch Senior Vice President Environmental, Health & Safety Duke Energy 526 South Church Street Mail Code EC3XP Charlotte, North Carolina 28202 NORTH CAROLINA Environmental Quality November 13, 2019 Subject: Coal Storage Pile Area — Assessment Clarification — Approval Mayo Steam Electric Plant Dear Mr. Draovitch: On October 11, 2019, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) received the Coal Storage Pile Area — Assessment Clarification for the Mayo Steam Electric Plant. DEQ hereby approves the request to submit the findings of the coal pile storage area assessment in a report separate from the comprehensive site assessment for sources at the facility not associated with the coal ash impoundment due March 31, 2020 per the schedule set forth in DEQ's May 9, 2019 letter. This approval is based on the anticipated schedule for completing the site work, analysis of soil and groundwater samples, data review and interpretation, and report submittal not being compatible with the time frames specified in DEQ's May 9, 2019 letter.
