NC Department of Water Quality
Attn: Mr. John Hennessy or Ms Cyndi Karoly,
As an avid outdoorsman, nature lover, and steward of our natural resources I am opposed
to the reclamation of any additional wetlands in the proposed Block T development,
Corps Action ID #SAW-2006-41496-043.
The apparent over development in this portion of Harnett County is having a serious
negative impact to the Carolina Lakes Community in which I call home. Wetlands in
particular are the focal point of food, shelter, and the cycle of life for many animal and
plant species. Coupled with increased growth around that development, our wildlife has
no other sanctuary. Many of the proposed areas are fish spawning areas, amphibian
habitats, as well as food sources for various other indigenous plants and animals.
The Department of Water Quality biological assessments (Sec. B Chapter 14, Cape Fear
River Subbasin 03-06-14) grades the Jumping Run Creek as excellent, however that was
not always the case, wise stewardship has given it that. Increased development and I feel
loss of wetlands will negatively impact not only the immediate area, but the watershed it
belongs to. Other tailings such as the Long Valley Farm which is part of The Nature
Conservancy will also be affected.
While I am not opposed to development, it must be balanced and not be at the demise of
our Wetlands which we can only lose once. Additionally; the enormous amount of
development and lack of adequate Federal and State resources allows developers to easily
turn a blind eye on following Erosion control plans as well as Federal and State Clean
Water Acts.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
