On 21 January 2021 Jamie Mendoza, Long Range Planner with Gaston County, reached out to you and connected us to discuss the impact the Piedmont Lithium mine will have on archeological and historic sites. 2. On that same date I ema!led you some questions HPC had concerning the project's impact. 3. On 28 January you responded with a blurry map of the site and gave us some information relative to our inquiries. 4. On 21 February I responded in another email with follow up questions and the specific request for a copy of the archeological and historical survey document. 5. Your failure to respond to this email precipitated my 31 March email, in which I copied the earlier email with the request for you to respond in some manner. 6. On 20 April you finally responded with an email stipulating some comments about my 21 February requests. I appreciate your efforts and your response to some of my questions. Your response addresses the Jonas D. Rudisill House and Beaverdam Cemetery, and you outlined the criteria for significance. I have a couple of concerns. First, you have never commented on our request for a copy of the archeological and historical survey documents. To be specific: the Gaston County Historic Preservation Commission humbly requests a copy of these documents for our records. Secondly, you pointed out that the Michael Rudisill Cemetery (224401) was not owned by Piedmont Lithium. You also suggested "checking with register of Deeds to contact current landowner." I did just that, and Wade and Diane Carpenter told me that they formerly owned this property but had recently sold it to Piedmont Lithium! There are two cemeteries on this property —the Michael Rudisill Cemetery and an unnamed cemetery which may be African American. I am confused, perplexed and a little frustrated. I hope that your response was an example of your company's confusion about their property ownership and not a direct attempt to mislead with false statements to our Board. I wish you would respond to this, please. Thirdly, the Rudisill Cemetery example poses another critical issue. As your company continues to purchase land (we are aware that you have options on significant acreage of land), will you make these purchases known to me or another representative of HPC? We should be working together. Piedmont Lithium and HPC have their jobs to do. I hope you are not choosing an adversarial relationship; we are certainly not. Finally, as I have discussed in earlier emails, the map you sent of the land is blurry and difficult to read. I hope this not your only map. Would you please forward a higher quality map? Again, many thanks for your 29 April response as that is very helpful to our Board. As before, I am copying this email to our Board members and Jamie Mendoza. I look forward to working with you in a positive fashion. Robert C.
