Dear Representatives,
l don't usualHy comment on issues such as these but I've had a chainge of heart. After my
family irecently vacationed at IL.alke Norman, we saw (and read about) effects of the systemic
damage that ineighboiring llindustd4l sites have created on the citizens and commuinllfies
suirroun6ing the Ipoweir (plaint and the residual(long term adverse affects as welIL 1By inot VlHy
undeirstain6ing the Ipoteintiall future hazards on the ecosystem, these liindustrii4ll complexes
have sustallined larger problems that I'm sure they oirigllinalHy ineveir anticipated. The Tir9iainglle is
a rapidly growing and ev6lviing area. Currently, we have the Ipoweir and abflllty to sustain
natu14l habits, recreation and resources for generations to come. Uimstead park and the
lands surroun61ng are an llincre6ble inatuir4ll ecosystem that is home to thousainds of 6ffeirent
species, inot to mention the seirene recreation it's creating for us iresidents as welIL As l look to
the future and llmagliine my teen daughter Milking these same tralOs with her kids, l would hope
to llimaglline she would have access to that abuinclaint inatuir4ll habitat as w6H, especialHy tin a
vast urban area, what a boon to Ibotlh her and her commu6ity. Furthermore, l just finished
rea61ng a Iboolk calHed 1Birali6ing Sweetgirass about Indigenous stories and ecosystems. In that
book the story of Onondaga IL.alke tin NY (surrounded Iby my direct ancestors the Onondaga
trllbe) was shared as the most Ipollluted lake tin the U61ted States on what was once The
Onondaga's land. The lake became llindustd4l wastellaind because of ineighboiring llindustd4l
sites and iresiduall downstream iruinoff. What was once sacred Ibecaime Iboth irullined and
degraded Iby Ilaclk of ireslpect Iby its inew cairetalkeirs. Flease spaire this area from Ipoteintialllly
simflair Iloing term effects. Flease save this Ilaind as a inatuirall area.
Best,
MicheEle Simith
