Subject: [External] Wake Stone Corporation Triangle Quarry
Mr. Dan Sams, Hearing Officer
NC Environmental Quality
Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources
I am writing to request that the Wake Stone Corporation Triangle Quarry, Mining Permit 92-10 be denied.
The proposed rock quarry will change the environment. It will displace huge amounts of soil and plants, and
force animals out of the area. Abandoned quarries rarely leave enough soil to allow life to return to the area.
Since this proposed quarry is located to the Crab Tree Creek water shed, it will be prone to flooding because it
will be dug below the water table. Toxic materials could seep into groundwater if the quarry's water reaches an
areas water table.
Not only does this lead to a loss of existing animal wildlife, it also leads to a huge loss of
biodiversity as plants and aquatic habitats are destroyed. Moreover, adjacent ecosystems are
affected by noise, dust, pollution and contaminated water. Quarries disrupt the existing movement
of surface water and groundwater; they interrupt natural water recharge and can lead to reduced
quantity and quality of drinking water for residents and wildlife near or downstream from the
quarry site.
It is well known that most quarries are not being properly rehabilitated. The landscape will be
blotted with a destructive 400 foot deep pit, and species of all kinds endure permanent negative
impacts. For communities, the displacement of water resources is one of the biggest concerns
pits and quarries pose. Beyond the physical changes to the landscape, the daily barrage of noise,
dust and exhaust produced by hundreds of dump trucks hauling aggregate can have serious
effects on the health of people living nearby.
Please deny Wake Stone's application for the mining permit.
Sincerely,
Chad F. Chandler
