I was registered to speak but combined my comments with my husband's for the sake of your time. If you have lived in this area long enough, you have inevitably had a windshield broken on your car while driving behind one of the trucks coming out of the quarry. It's not a pleasant experience, it's costly and time consuming. But quarry rock is necessary and windshields can be replaced. So as good neighbors, we put up with it. But the damage done to the area abutting Umstead State Park, cannot be undone. It will be a blight for generations to come. Our home is off of Weston Parkway, we invite you to come see the impact the quarry has on our current home. The blasts are disruptive, even setting off all the dogs in the neighborhood. The quarry is disruptive at the entrance to Umstead State Park as well. While we are within biking or hiking distance to the North Harrison entrance to Umstead Park, we cannot ride or walk into that entrance because of the danger and exhaust of the dump trucks entering and exiting there. This forces us to use the Reedy Creek Trail entrance to Umstead, which Wake Stone will now make disruptive and unsafe. We invite you to go see the activity at the parking lot and the little bridge that takes you there, and how close the homes are to the quarry. A map does not show the reality of the situation. Any new potential quarry adjacent to such a well -visited park will be a physical hazard to public safety. We ask the DEQ to deny the permit to Wake Stone now, but also in future appeals. No accommodations or mitigations can be made now or in the future that won't have a lasting adverse effect on the park. Sincerely, Valerie Nordin 115 Bathgate Lane Cary, NC 27513
