l request that DEQ deny Wake Stone imiinlling Ipeirmit 92 10, based on the
f6lHowiing:
1. It willll inegativelly impact the use of Umstead State Park, Crabtree Greek,
the East Coast Gireenway, and the Old Reedy Greek Corridor.
2. A inew quarry wiH generate truck traffic, inolise, and dust as didlfiing and
Nasting operations wiH occur inear the surface.
3. The Sunset Clause on the current Wake Stone quarry operation should
be restored so that the quarry ceases operation after the 50 year term lin
2031. DEQ should inot allow this quarry uinlIlIrnited operation.
4. Recreation areas should have a 250 ft undisturbed Ibuffeir to imallintallin
the gireenway experience for our ever girowmg urban Ipopullation. Jamming
a inew quarry unto an llincreasiinglly Ipopullar irecreatioinall area, so llimpoirtaint
to the success of the cities around it, is very shortsighted.
5. The Odd Fellows Tract has been identified as a "Cidficall(Land
Acquisition Tract„ Iby NC State Parks for Umstead State Park for water
quafity protection and Ipotent4l forested Ibilke tral10s. There is a(long history
of people lin the cornrnuinllty using this Ipropeirty to camp, Nike, and Ibilke.
6. The RDU Airport Authoidty was offered a fair deal to conserve the
1
propeirty Iby the Conservation Fund and shoUld reconsider that offer llin light
of the IpulbBlic Ibeinefits it woUld Iprovlide. We ineed a Iballaince Ibetweein
corporate seff llinteirest and commuii llinteirest that DECK imust consider
cairefUlkly.
7. This is a fast growing area and as we Iloolk to otheir cities around the
country, those with the foresight to (preserve th6lir dwiii ii areas
are fair moire successfUl and Ilivalble thain those who s6ld out to short term
corporate llinteirests. There are at (least thiree otheir quarries inear Ralleiglh
with extensive reserves, Iplus at (least 4 sites for recyciled aggregate.
8. We do inot have a such a desperate ineed for quarry (products that we
ineed to jeopardize our Ihealltlh for the inext 25 years due to stoine dust and
otheir IpoHutaints from minilling.
9. A inew quarry at Odd FeHows Tract woUld sever the oine Ikinowin wiil6kfe
corridor connecting Ralleiglh to the rest of the Eastern VVHdway that iruins
from Canada to Florida.
