HomeMy WebLinkAbout20220502_B-J-Carr S'2, - / 0 CT) May 2,2022 RE: Dunn Mine,Trenton,NC To whom it may concern, Thank you for sharing with us about the mine expansion behind our home. There are a couple of areas of concern which we are addressing below. However,we've noticed that the mining permit application available online is not complete. There are several questions on the permit application we found unanswered or in direct conflict with what the property owners have shared with us. Will we be notified if any answers are changed on the permit application? Please understand we purchased our home in the country and the surrounding land to provide us as much peace and quiet as possible. In order for the mine to operate they must use heavy equipment that clinks and clanks loudly along with back up beepers. This has started as early as 5-5:30 AM. Could this start a little later in the day? Could there be set operating hours? Apparently, our children are light sleepers,so this wakes them up really early. As the operations comes closer behind our home, this noise Will only get louder. Maybe a tall berm would be useful to help deaden the noise as well? Additionally, the permit application available on DEQ website indicated there would not be any dewatering and crushing activities. Is this accurate? If this changed, would we be notified and allowed comments, such as with this permit? We can say that when the mine was pumping day and night, the pumps were very loud and never stopped. If they intend to restart with the pumps, could they look into an electric motor or something that would be quieter than the loud diesel motors that ran constantly? If trying to dig deeper into the sand, maybe us a dredge which would operate within the stated hours? If they start crushing,as they have expressed a desire to do,this would be very loud and dusty as well. When we purchased here,we were told that land was an abandoned sand mine that had been reclaimed. At no point were we told that it was a rock quarry with all the noise and debris that can come from that. Again, since this permits excludes this,we assume that this will not be happening without another permit application. Is that an accurate assumption? Our last concern, is regarding the fires that burns frequently. As that gets closer to our adjoining property that smoke will likely affect the enjoyment of our home and outdoor space. If there must be large fires to burn the debris, could we work together to find a location on their property that isn't close to our land? Presently,we have heard of other neighbors waking up in the middle of the night with so much smoke in their homes that they feared it was on fire. We do not want to experience that. Additionally,on this note, I didn't see this as an application for an LCID(landfill) permit. Understanding what all that type of permit would allow, I'm assuming we would be notified separately if that was a desire. Again, is this an accurate assumption? We hope this letter is received in the spirit it is intended;as a supportive neighbor, but also as concerned property owners that has invested a substantial sum into their property. We don't want our enjoyment of the property to be spoiled by diesel motors, smoke, and the clinking and clanking of machinery throughout the night and on the weekends.
