WAKE Resolution Supporting The Conservation Fund's Request to
COUNTY Purchase the "Odd Fellows/Crabtree Creek" Property from the
NORTH-L CAROLINA Raleigh -Durham Airport Authority to Expand Umstead State Park
WHEREAS, The Conservation Fund has made an offer to purchase the "Odd
Fellows/Crabtree Creek" (Odd Fellows) property from the Raleigh -Durham Airport
Authority (Authority); and
WHEREAS, the offer to purchase the Odd Fellows property will ensure permanent
conservation of the property; and
WHEREAS, permanent conservation of the property prevents incompatible
development and land uses on the property that may impact airport operations; and
WHEREAS, the sale of the Odd Fellows property will provide cash immediately for
Authority operations and/or investments, while removing the uncertainty of future lease
payments at an unknown date; and
WHEREAS, Wake County currently leases approximately 181 acres from the
Authority for use as Wake County's highest utilized park, Lake Crabtree County Park;
and
WHEREAS, the sale of the Odd Fellows property will increase area opportunities for
recreation, open space, water and air quality protections, and help build and support a
healthy community; and
WHEREAS, increased recreational opportunities in the area will have a positive
impact on tourism, economic development, and community health by creating a regional
recreation center; and
WHEREAS, the sale of the Odd Fellows property will create a permanent amenity
for the community, as opposed to, a long term liability for the Authority; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Wake County Board of
Commissioners supports The Conservation Fund's request to purchase the "Odd
Fellows/Crabtree Creek" property from the Raleigh -Durham Airport Authority to expand
Umstead State Park, and requests the Raleigh -Durham Airport Authority to re -consider
that purchase offer.
