Salisbury Street PO Box 550, Suite 1000 Raleigh, NC 27602 http://www.wakegov.com/county/parks/default.htm The mission of your appointed Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee (OSAPAC) is to advise and assist Wake County in the creation, management and preservation of parks, open space and natural areas for the benefit of Wake County's citizens, plant and animal life. The Committee is compelled to speak out on a project that directly impedes our work, is detrimental to the interests of public parks, recreation and open space and harms our citizens. Over several years OSAPAC has followed the proposed lease of the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority's "Odd Fellows tract" (105+/-acres) by the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority (RDUAA) to the Wake Stone Corporation for the purpose of expanding an existing privately owned rock quarry. After thorough review of the issues, agreements and history of the process, OSAPAC best believes such a lease will forever change the character of the property in ways that are not in the long term interests of the citizens of Wake County or RDUAA. We recommend the Board of Commissioners take all prudent action to prevent the approval of this mining lease. Sincerely; Wake County Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee Robert Hinson, Chair George Hess, Vice Chair Members: Ann Marie Amico, Robert Finch, Robin Hammond, Greg Hoit, Mallory Martin, George Matthis, Charles Roe, Mark Schwegel, HC Woody Woodward
