Subject: [External] 'Wake Stone Triangle Quarry Expansion
Hello,
My name is Matthew Vazquez, I live at 309 Hidden Springs Dr. in Durham. I urge the DEQto deny the Wake Stone's
request to expand their Triangle Quarry.
It should be denied due to G.S. 74-51(d)(5) - it will have a significantly adverse effect on the purposes of a publicly
owned park, forest or recreation area. This expanded quarry will have a significant adverse impact on Umstead Park and
the East Coast Greenway. This expansion would place Wake Stone's quarry much closer to Umstead State Park and
affect a much larger portion of the park. It would also move the quarry next to the East Coast Greenway, which runs
along Old Reedy Creek Road. This is a very popular biking and walking area which connects Lake Crabtree Park to
Umstead Park, and also connects the Cary Greenway system to the Raleigh greenway system. The blasting, air pollution,
and noise of a quarry would have a significant negative impact.
It should also be denied due to G.S. 74-51(d)(4) - it would be a direct and substantial physical hazard to a neighboring
dwelling house. The Dunn residence is only 200 feet from the proposed quarry pit. Wake Stone and their consultants
have stated that their blasting will not damage a building as close as 500 feet away, but they have not and can not claim
that their blasting will not damage the Dunn's house 200 feet away.
I urge you to deny this expansion.
Sincerely,
Matthew Vazquez
