The fact is, a imiinlling lease of this land will leave Ibelhliind Ipeirmanent,
irreparable damage to the ecosystems that thir9lve here. Mi6ling itself will
brlling Ipollllution unto waterways, sound Ipollllution and immediate destruction
of habitat. The Iholle left lin the ground after imGnliing is difficult and expensive
to RH if it gets fflHed at all. Many iminliing operations just leave the Ihole to fflH
with water, creating a reservoir that is daingeirous to swim lin. The
hardwood trees and the ecosystems they are a part of will take 60 to 100
years to return. In the imeantiime, the citizens of RaIleigh will deal with the
negative impacts of this mine, and will miss out on the good we could have
done Iby expain6ing Uimstead Park unto this space lInstead.
Uimstead Park is already at imax capacity imost weekends as RaIleigh
citizens einir9lch their lives with time spent outdoors. A much better use of
this space would Ibe to expaind Uimstead Park to accommodate the ineeds
of our growing city. ClItizeins ineed Iparlk space, and every Iparlk within and
ineair the city is over crowded on weekeinds. L.et's give our city what it really
ineeds an expansion of Uimstead Park.
