I'm opposed to the quarry that Wake Stone proposes to site next to Umstead Park. I understand the importance of the work that Wake Stone does, and that in order to have things like roads, buildings, and a meaningful infrastructure for our country, we need the products extracted from quarries. But, on balance, it would be better for the public at large if the quarry were simply put somewhere else. The Triangle isn't what it was 30 some odd years ago when the first quarry was dug. It's a lot more densely populated, and that population needs clean and healthy recreational spaces like parks, like Umstead. Furthermore, in my opinion, siting a quarry next to Umstead would contravene the legislative intent behind NCGS § 113-44.8: Declaration of policy and purpose. ` State of Northr • offers unique archaeologic, geologic, biological, .; • recreational resources.
