Subject: [External] Quarry Quandary
Hi Mr. Wrenn,
I sent the following email to Mr. Sams regarding the Wake Stone quarry permit application:
I'm opposed to the quarry that Wake Stone proposes to site next to Umstead Park. I understand the importance of the
work that Wake Stone does, and that in order to have things like roads, buildings, and a meaningful infrastructure for
our country, we need the products extracted from quarries. But, on balance, it would be better for the public at large if
the quarry were simply put somewhere else. The Triangle isn't what it was 30 some odd years ago when the first quarry
was dug. It's a lot more densely populated, and that population needs clean and healthy recreational spaces like parks,
like Umstead. Furthermore, in my opinion, siting a quarry next to Umstead would contravene the legislative intent
behind NCGS § 113-44.:
Declaration of policy and purpose.
` State of Northr • offers unique archaeologic, geologic,biological, .; •
recreational resources. These resources are part of the heritage of the people of this State.
The heritage of a people should be preserved and managed by the

General Assembly finds it appropriate t• establishParks System. This
system shall consist of parks which include representative examples of ` • • •
as may be appropriate. Park lands are to be used by the people of this State and their
to be preserved by this Article, together with such surrounding lands
visitors in order to promote understanding of and pride in the natural heritage of this State.
(c) The tax dollars of the people of the State should be expended in an efficient and
effective manner for the purpose of assuring that the State Parks System is adequate to
accomplish the goals as defined in this Article.
(d) The purpose of this Article is to establish methods and principles for the planned
acquisition, development, and operation of State parks. (1987, c. 243, s. 1; 2003-340
I strongly urge the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to deny Wake Stone's application to put a
quarry next to Umstead Park.
