Subject: [External] PLEASE "Deny Mining Permit 92-10"
Dear Mr. Sams and Mr. Wrenn,
My name is Anna K Smith, 632 W South Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. I'm requesting for DEQ to please
deny mining permit 92-10 under subsection 74-51d subsection 5, "that the operation will have a
significantly adverse effect on the purposes of a publicly owned park, forest or recreation area."
Our suburban area is one of the fastest growing areas in the entire United States with an average of 67
people per day moving here. Why would we want to effectively destroy a beautiful, historic state park
bordering our capital city - the only city in the nation built to be a state capital.
I know that NC DEQ has sent a letter stating "industrial mining is generally not conducive to the
support and promotion of or compatible with the very elements that led William B. Umstead State
Park to being listed on the National Register of Historic Places: land restoration through landscape
design and outdoor recreation. Please take this letter seriously as it should be the NC staff members of
the state park who should be the experts deciding on what is and isn't compatible with the park. The
NC DEQ had denied the quarry initially in 1980.
Lastly, Wake Stone Corporation has been a poor environmentally -conscious corporate citizen to Wake
County as noted in the misleading and changed wording in its government contracts.
PLEASE DENY THE RDU - UMSTEAD PARK QUARRY, PERMIT 92-10. This is your legacy, please
help keep our Raleigh a wonderful place.
Best, Anna K Smith
