Thanks, Dr. Jean Spooner, Chair, The Umstead Coalition. -------- Forwarded Message-------- Subject:"Deny Mining Permit 92-10" Date:Sun, 12 Jul 2020 11:31:31 -0400 From:High K <russandmalissaggmaiLcom> My name is Malissa Kilpatrick and I live at 3108 Raymond St, Raleigh 27607 1. I'm calling for DEQ to deny mining permit 92-10 under subsection 74-51d subsections 4 and 5 1. Subsection 4:That the operation will constitute a direct and substantial physical hazard to public health and safety or to a neighboring dwelling house, school, church, hospital, commercial or industrial building, public road or other public property, excluding matters relating to use of a public road; Subsection 5:That the operation will have a significantly adverse effect on the purposes of a publicly owned park, forest or recreation area; My family has lived in the Triangle counties since the 1700s. I even know the family that originally owned the Umstead Park land. My relatives' land was taken for Falls of the Neuse and Jordan Lake. Family cemeteries are now drowned under water. Often the land was taken for pennies on the dollar and when it was not flooded, resold to developers for premium prices. I take my public ownership of this land very seriously. This land to be leased is public land owned by the citizens of the three counties. It is not owned by the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority. The area around Umstead Park is valuable to the citizens of the Triangle. The area has historical, ecological, physical fitness, emotional and spiritual value. It is used by the young and older people of our counties on a regular basis as a much needed retreat from encroaching urbanization. The land is financially valuable because it is in the middle of the triangle. NO new land is being made. Even if this were developed as private property it would be much more valuable than to make it into a quarry, cut down the trees and dig up the dirt and leave an un-reclaimable hole. The only thing it would be good for after a quarry is as a large garbage dump. (Unless we plan to put a sports stadium, or amusement park in the hole, or perhaps a garden like Bouchard gardens in Vancouver?) I did not study much geology at Duke, but there are about a dozen universities and colleges in the Triangle with Geology departments and experts. SURELY private land for quarrying can be obtained outside the city where a dangerous hole would not be such a hazard. I acknowledge that Wake Stone has been a good and responsible industry. I am sure they can find dirt and stone elsewhere. Their plans for a bike path are inadequate as well. Please please deny this mining permit. Yours truly, Malissa Kilpatrick Moe;yo' Virus -free. .::.:i.`:i :t:::. orrn,
