Subject: [External] DENY Mining Permit No. 92-10 modification application
Dear Mr. Sams,
I was so proud and grateful to the many people who spoke at the virtual public hearing regarding Wake
Stone Corporation's modification application for Mining Permit No.92-10. I did not speak myself, but heard
so many rational and relevant reasons why this application should be denied by DEQ.
I believe that several of the denial criteria apply to this application, but the most crucial one is Number 5:
"That the operation will have a significantly adverse effect on the purposes of a publicly -owned park,
forest or recreation area."
The "leasing" of this beautiful tree -covered property for a crushed stone quarry would irredeemably impair
and lessen the current uses and values, as well as future expansion options of the adjacent Umstead State
Park -- a publicly owned property that becomes ever more valuable to the environmental and recreational
needs of the Triangle Region and the State. Many speakers at the public hearing made this case very
cogently and eloquently and I strongly concur.
Please include in your report that this citizen asks for DENIAL OF THIS APPLICATION. I believe that denial
would be in the best interests of the people of North Carolina.
Sincerely,
Penelope Hornsby
