Natural Sciences Bill Hoffman NC Geology Survey 4100 Reedy Creek Rd. Raleigh, NC 27607 Dear Bill: I have examined the 4 core samples from the DOT boring MR-HB-1-94 from Martin county. The core is already as old as Cretaceous in the first sample (depth 80. I-80.6 ft.). Although the samples are not rich in Globotruncanid spp., the presence of rare Gc. gagnebini in samples 3 & 4 (depths 89.1-90.6 ft. and 94.1-95.6ft.) and forms related to Gc. bulloides are indicative of a middle Maestrichtian age. Other species present in all four samples which are common to the latest Cretaceous include Globigerinelloides prairiehillensis, Rugoglobigerina rugosa and Guembelitria cretacea. I see nothing that would make me think that the samples are as young as late Maestrichtian, and the presence of Gc. gagnebini should preclude them being as old as early Maestrichtian. The relative proportions of benthic to planktonic species, the mix of benthic species, the low diversity of planktonics and the overall small size of the planktonics suggest a middle shelf environment of deposition, although if the waters were turbid, it may have been a deeper setting. I will send the bulk samples back in a separate package, which should arrive shortly. Let me know if I can be of further help. Sincerely, 4/ 'J Robert D.
