Michaell Regain, Secretary DEQ,
The fact is, a imiinlling lease of this Ilaind will leave Ibelhliind Ipeirmaineint, irreparable daimage to the
ecosystems that thir9lve here. Mi6ling litsellf willl Ibrliing Ipollllutioin liinto waterways, sound Ipollllutioin
and lirnrnedliate destruction of habitat. The Ihole left liin the ground after mi16ling is difficult and
expensive to fiH if it gets fflHed at all. Many iminliing operations just leave the h6le to fiH with
water, creating a reservoir that is daingeirous to swim liin. The hardwood trees and the
ecosystems they are a part of willll take 60 to 100 years to return. In the meantime, the citizens
of Raleigh willll deal with the negative impacts of this amine, and willl imiss out oin the good we
could have doine Iby expain6ing Uimstead Park liinto this space liinstead.
Uimstead Park is already at imax capacity imost weekends as Raleigh citizens einidch their
lives with fime spent outdoors. A imuch Ibetteir use of this space would Ibe to expaind Uimstead
Park to accommodate the ineeds of our growing city. ClIfizeins ineed Iparlk space, wind every
park within wind ineair the city is over crowded oin weekeinds. L.et's give our city what it really
ineeds ain expansion of Uimstead Park.
Sincerely,
FAIMMIN, Ism
