Michael Regan, Secretary DEQ,
I ask that DEQ deny Wake Stone Corp’s application for a new rock mine (Permit 92-10) due
to the negative impacts on Umstead State Park, Crabtree Creek, the East Coast Greenway,
recreation in the Old Reedy Creek Corridor and the three adjacent homeowners.
The current Wake Stone quarry on Harrison Ave in Cary has been a bad neighbor for
Umstead State Park (trucks, noise, dust, more).
Please restore the Sunset Clause to the current Wake Stone quarry operations that were
promised to end in 2031, 50 years from 1981.
Recreation areas greenways should have a 250ft undisturbed buffer (old Reedy Creek Road)
to maintain the greenway experience. No berms or walls within that buffer zone.
The Odd Fellows Tract has been identified as a “Critical Land Acquisition Tract” by NC State
Parks for Umstead State Park for water quality protection and potential forested bike trails.
The Boy Scouts have camped, hiked, and biked on this property since 1958.
RDU Airport Authority was offered a fair deal to conserve the property by the Conservation
Fund and should reconsider that offer in light of the public benefits it would provide.
There is precious little undeveloped green space left in the Triangle area; it should be
treasured and protected rather than destroyed.
The air pollution from quarry mining operations can further negatively impact the visitors of
Umstead State Park per year for the next 25+ years if a new quarry is at work.

A new quarry at Odd Fellows Tract would sever the one known wildlife corridor connecting
Raleigh to the rest of the Eastern Wildway that runs from Canada to Florida.
