Revised July 13, 2021 P a g e 119 November 15, 2021 Rockingham Mine Permit Application 3. C. Storm water accumulates in the pit in response to rainfall events. A portion of the water is used for dust suppression and in the production process. Excess storm water, retained temporarily in the pit, is clarified, sampled quarterly and discharged to Hitchcock Creek in compliance with our existing Water Quality Permit NCG020107. We have no reason to suspect the operation has had or will have the potential to adversely impact any well in the vicinity. This is based in part upon the fact that during Vulcan's 25+ years' operating history of this facility, we have not substantiated any impacts to any adjoining wells. Regardless, should a concern come to our attention, we would fully investigate the inquiry. The surrounding area is served by private wells. Equally important as past operating history is the geologic formation which is located on our existing permitted area. Ground water occurs in two aquifer units at and around the site, the soil zone and the bedrock zone. These two aquifer units are hydrologically interrelated, with recharge to bedrock occurring as downward leakage from water in the soil. In the soil zone aquifer, the quarry site is fully hydrologically isolated from any domestic wells. Hydrologic barriers are created by Long Branch to north, by hilltop and unnamed tributaries to Long Branch on the west, by Hitchcock Creek on the east and by ridgelines on the south of the site. Ground water divides and boundaries in the bedrock zone appear to be similar to those of the soil horizon and surface water, tending to isolate the quarry hydrologically.
