Waters, Ph.D. spatch(anewsouthassoc. com RE: Archaeological Report: Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Foster Forbes Mine, Currituck County, ER 21-0969 Dear Mr. Patch: Thank you for your September 15, 2021, letter transmitting the archaeological survey report for the proposed Foster -Forbes Mine in Currituck County. We have reviewed the report and offer the following comments. New South Associates, Inc., placed 83 shovel tests spaced 30 meters on center over the proposed 41-acre mine site. Supplemental auger tests were conducted between the shovel tests to better document the deep stratigraphy of the soil. Although none of the excavated soil from these holes contained artifacts, this methodology meets or exceeds the Office of State Archaeology guidelines for Phase I archaeological survey methodology. New South Associates, Inc. has recommended no further archaeological work in connection with this project. We concur with this recommendation. The above comments are made pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Regulations for Compliance with Section 106 codified at 36 CFR Part 800.
