Subject: [External] Wake Stone Triangle Quarry Expansion
NC DNR Officials,
My name is Clifton Jones, I live at 4601 Basilica Dr in Holly Springs, NC.
I urge the DEQ to deny the Wake Stone's request to expand their Triangle
Quarry.
I was born in and have lived in the piedmont area of North Carolina my
entire life. I grew up on a farm with plenty of natural beauty all around me
so I have a true appreciation for what it means. I moved to the RTP area
for work back in 1989 and have lived in the area ever since. I have seen
RTP turn from Davis Dr. disappearing into forest to Davis Dr. being a 4-
lane road through buildings, shops, apartments and subdivisions.
Meanwhile, Umstead State Park has been an oasis the entire time. I
understand the need for progress, tax base, and jobs. That being said, we
need to carefully preserve a place for this growing population to visit for
physical and mental fitness. We need a place for our families to take their
children to explore. Anyone that sees the big picture can see what is going
on with this expansion request. Boards being loaded with members that
serve a private business, regulations being changed under the radar. Please
step up and serve the greater good.

It should be denied due to G. S. 74-51(d)(5) - it will have a significantly
adverse effect on the purposes of a publicly owned park, forest or
recreation area. This expanded quarry will have a significant adverse
impact on Umstead Park and the East Coast Greenway. This expansion
would place Wake Stone's quarry much closer to Umstead State Park and
affect a much larger portion of the park. It would also move the quarry
next to the East Coast Greenway, which runs along Old Reedy Creek
Road. This is a very popular biking and walking area which connects Lake
Crabtree Park to Umstead Park, and also connects the Cary Greenway
system to the Raleigh greenway system. The blasting, air pollution, and
noise of a quarry would have a significant negative impact.
It should also be denied due to G. S. 74-51(d)(4) - it would be a direct and
substantial physical hazard to a neighboring dwelling house. The Dunn
residence is only 200 feet from the proposed quarry pit. Wake Stone and
their consultants have stated that their blasting will not damage a building
as close as 500 feet away, but they have not and can not claim that their
blasting will not damage the Dunn's house 200 feet away.
I urge you to deny this expansion.
Sincerely,
Clifton Jones
Clif
