TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
Project No. 1802366.5105
EMAIL rkirkman@golder.com
RESULTS OF WELL RECEPTOR SURVEY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
This memorandum is intended to summarize the results of the well receptor survey conducted in December
2018 by Petrologic Solutions, Inc. (Petrologic) and provide recommendations on additional work as outlined in
our December 21, 2018, proposal for drilling and well installation. This information is intended to supplement
ongoing investigations related to potential groundwater concerns that may arise during the rezoning of property
adjacent to the existing aggregate quarry in Princeton, North Carolina (NC) for potential expansion areas.
Petrologic completed the well survey on December 12 — 13, 2018, to supplement data obtained during the
desktop evaluation of groundwater related information, presented in our September 28, 2018, draft letter report.
As part of the recommendations in the September 28, 2018, report, a receptor survey was recommended to
meet the 1,000-foot radius well identification requirement for the two potential expansion properties. Based on
information provided by Hanson, the land parcels proposed for expansion activities are likely to be located
across Rains Mill Road and south of the Little River, although a final decision has not yet been reached.
As part of this survey, we obtained a map showing public (i.e., County) water lines. However, County staff were
unable to confirm whether or not more than 80 addresses within the 1,000-foot radius were receiving water bills.
Therefore, we contacted the County Health Department and obtained and reviewed well permits for available
wells within the 1,000-foot radius. Well permits began in the 1970s; therefore, no records were available for
older wells.
To supplement the missing records, Petrologic performed a 'windshield' survey, as feasible, for the additional
residences with potential wells. Attached to this technical memorandum is a summary figure showing the
location of public water lines, shallow (bored) and deep (drilled) wells, and the 1,000-foot buffer. Also attached
is a tabular summary of other pertinent available information obtained as part of the survey (e.g., well depths,
etc.).
Based on the location of fire hydrants and water meters identified during the recently completed well survey (to
be submitted under separate cover) and review of water line maps provided by the County, public water is
generally available along most of the major roads within 1,000 feet of the existing quarry and proposed
expansion areas. Although public water is generally available, it does not appear to be used by some residents.
Several homes appear to still be using wells for potable water, choosing to not hook up either due to connect
cost, or more likely, due to a preference for untreated (unchlorinated) water.
The majority of wells identified appear to be 30-inch bored wells, indicating use of the surficial aquifer, which is
represented by coastal plain sediments. The surficial aquifer in this area, referred to as the Cretaceous Aquifer,
ranges in thickness from 0 feet (in topographically higher areas where the Cretaceous sediments were not

deposited) up to 80 feet, with average thicknesses ranging between 20 and 60 feet. We anticipate that the
bored wells identified during the well survey are no deeper than 60 feet and likely range from 30 —40 feet, based
on publicly available information. A few drilled wells were also identified during the survey, likely drawing water
from the deeper, bedrock aquifer located in the fractured crystalline rock underlying the Cretaceous sediments.
Two drilled wells were identified south of the Little River and three drilled wells were identified north of the Little
River within 1000 feet of the quarry and proposed expansion areas.
Given that two aquifers appear to be present and used by locals within 1,000 feet of the quarry and proposed
expansion areas, both of these aquifers will require monitoring to evaluate potential for offsite impacts due to
quarry dewatering. Consequently, we recommend that Hanson install both shallow and deep piezometers to
allow monitoring of groundwater levels in both aquifers to provide information related to hydrodynamic
influences of mine dewatering as outlined in our December 21, 2018, proposal. Although this will result in the
installation of a greater number of piezometers than would normally be required for an expansion effort, many
of the piezometers will be much shallower, and fewer deep piezometers will be required.
The proposed locations for the five wells are shown on the attached figure and assume that parcel development
will be on the parcel on the same side of Little River as the current facility; if the parcel across the river is
considered further, additional wells will be required. Following well installation and development (if needed),
Golder recommends proceeding with 8 weeks of water level collection using pressure transducers and
comparing to pumping records for the active quarry to evaluate data as a 'simulated pumping test to help
determine any impacts to the local aquifers (shallow and deep/bedrock). Following data collection and
evaluation, a report will be submitted for review. Should you have any questions in the interim, please contact
us to discuss.
Sincerely,
GOLDER ASSOCIATES NC, INC.
