Adam Parr,
It has come to my attention that information regarding the Howell Parker Cemetery of
New London might be of use in your decision in the issuance of approval for the re -mining of
the old Parker Gold Mine and any quarrying therein on said property, as the cemetery itself is
part and parcel with the land the old mine resides on, and the proposed remining as well.
Ergo, I will try as briefly as possible to provide such information. I suppose introductions
should be first, though.
I believe you've been in contact already with my mother, Deborah Noah, on the issue
over the phone. I am her youngest son, Daniel, and descendent through my father, Michael V
Noah's bloodline of the aforementioned Parker family that is interred near the proposed
mining site. Howell Parker is my fifth great grandfather. I am a native of North Carolina, and a
resident of Stanly County most of my life. I am a graduate of the nearby Pfeiffer University, as
well, North Stanly High School, and New London Elementary. Note that I personally do not
have an interest or stake whether the mine is back in production or not, beyond concern over
the land where my own progenitors are laid to rest. It is this concern, or should I say lack
thereof, that I wish to convey to you.
The current owner of the old mine site, as well as the cemetery, Gus Schad, has been
beyond amenable and approachable on our specific concerns for the cemetery parcel of land.
He has in response to my own family's inquiries verbally agreed the following:
1. He will have all downed trees and limbs cleaned from the area.
2. He will establish a better border than what currently exists for the parcel of land.
3. He will have all dead trees that would, if fallen on their own, compromise any stone
markers in the cemetery, cut and removed from the area.
4. He will not be mining near the cemetery itself.
Given the current nature of mining, my family and I have no doubts that Mr. Schad is not
only a man of his word, as actions are already in motion to help us with the maintenance of
the cemetery, but also an approachable man if we should have any problems in the future.
We do not feel that there is a danger of any damage to the cemetery due to mining or
encapsulated blasting. We feel that the cemetery should not be a factor standing in the way
of Mr. Schad's business. Other issues over the proposed operation are not my family's
concern.
My own personal feeling on the matter.... there are those in the community that think it is
their place to tell me how I should feel about the issue. That I should be irate. I get a slight
kick out of that, considering it is likely none of those people have even seen one of my
forebearers stones, nor have likely ever visited the land. I feel on this particular issue, people
are grasping at whatever straws they can, over concerns of their own property values. And
that those people should not drag the stones of my own ancestors into their private war as if
they ever cared in the first place. THAT, sir, is what would make someone like me irate.
I appreciate the time you've taken reading this, and on the issue itself Adam. If you have
any questions for me, I'm always available through this line!
Best regards,
Daniel M Noah
