Please confirm receipt and that this will be included with the public comments. Thank you. -Natalie It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important... from "The Little Prince" Regarding Wake Stone's Response to DEQ Questions, ORC bridge area Natalie Lew December 14, 2020 The following is a comment regarding Wake Stone Corporation's responses to NC DEMLR July 23, 2020 Request for Supplemental Information Letter (Triangle Quarry Mining Permit 92-10 Expansion / Modification Application) Question 15. Please provide additional information regarding screening for the following locations: a. Future reserve section —The operation would be visible to 1-40 and parts of Old Reedy Creek Road. (Page 150 of the PDF. Please refer to the PDF as there is a picture.) Wake Stone wrote "The future reserve area will not be logged or cleared as part of this permit action, and therefore provides 1000-1400 feet of undisturbed vegetation between Interstate 40 and the southern end of Old Reedy Creek Road from any proposed mining activity." The usage of "as part of this permit action" is yet another example of Wake Stone's incomplete and evasive response history. The public deserves to know what Wake Stone's plans are in their entirety, not piece meal. We also deserve to know all intents and plans BEFORE any permit is granted as some of these hidden or elusive, non -stated intentions are things that should result in permit denial. We know from the maps in Wake Stone's application that they intend to quarry this section in the future. So, why do they wash their responses down the stream (along with their dust!)? Wake Stone must be required to fully answer Question 15, addressing ALL future intentions and possibilities, by saying "When we clear cut this section, this is what we will do, this is what will happen...." With this response, Wake Stone included a picture (on page 150 of the PDF). The picture is taken from the Cary side of the Old Reedy Creek (greenway) bridge and shows the right side of the greenway/road and the trees on Odd Fellows in the distance. The picture was taken strategically such that it is devoid of pedestrian and cycling users. Wake Stone is misrepresenting the usage of this area. The Town Of Cary Parking Lot is just a few hundred yards behind where the picture was taken. This bridge and this section of Old Reedy Creek is the connector between the highly used Black Creek Greenway and the highly used trails of Lake Crabtree Park and the highly used trails of Umstead State Park and hence is marked with a very large "Greenway" sign. The pavement is marked in several locations with large cycling symbols. Regarding their photo, Wake Stone says "The photo below clearly illustrates that there is no need for additional screening in this area..." Their picture indicates the opposite. The photo clearly illustrates why there should NOT be a quarry on Odd Fellows and why the permit modification request must be denied. This little section of the Research Triangle Park area is very highly used and very important as it exists right now. Wake Stone should not put a quarry within spitting distance of this highly used public area.
