This expansion shall include erosion control measures to provide run-off protection for the various large drainage areas around the new area. SITE DESCRIPTION: The site is located along to the west of Ararat River in a couple of large extreme bends in the river, east of the current Ararat Rock Quarry. The land consists of large rolling crop land along the ridges and steep wooded slopes and cliffs dropping down to the river. There exists a few streams on the property that run down the valleys to the river. Many of the slopes are 2:1 or greater. Construction Sequence 1. Obtain all Permits and Approvals. 2. After receiving erosion control plan approval the owner shall submit an electronic notice of intent form to the Land Quality Section, Call Winston Salem Regional Office (336) 776-9800 before any work begins. 3. Establish limits of clearance for each drainage area. Before any clearing or earthwork begins in any drainage area, all erosion control measures must be in place for that area. 4. Install Sediment Fence as shown on this plan for the Basin being installed. Clear just enough area for sediment fence construction. S. Construct Individual Sediment Basin a. Clear enough space for basin construction. b. Install Pipe Outlet, outlet protection and Riser structure if necessary per detail. c. Grade Basin. d. Install baffles. e,. Install' skimmer, . h. Seed and mat Dam, slopes and disturbed areas. 6. Install ditches and slope drains with designated outlet protection to direct run-off to newly constructed basin. 7. Seed all areas disturbed during installation of Erosion Control Measures 8. Clear and strip site to bedrock as shown, redirecting flow of water internally back to the mine area. 9. Repeat steps 3 thru 8 for each drainage area, as mining progresses. 10. If stripping depths prevent the natural flow of water to the basin, direct runoff to the interior mine pit. 11. When a basin no longer catches water from a drainage area, it can be removed. Call the local erosion control officer for an inspection before removing a basin. 12. Maintain all measures in a proper working order throughout the life of the structure. Maintenance procedures are listed on this sheet. 13. Inspect all measures according to the self inspection and reporting requirements shown on sheet C-9. Seeding Specifications ALL DISTURBED AREAS WILL BE PROTECTED WITH PERMANENT VEGETATION AS SOON AS PRACTICAL. SEEDING WILL TAKE PLACE IN 15 DAYS OR LESS FOLLOWING FINAL GRADING. OFF -SITE AREAS This project will not require any disturbance of off -site borrow or waste areas. All waste shall be stored on -site of the existing Mine Permit Area and disposed of through typical mining operations. CRITICAL AREAS Some critical areas include: The steep slopes that drop off toward the Ararat River; the 100 year flood plain boundary that lies outside the extents of the mining permit; the existing stream buffers and the power line easement that cuts through the center of the mining operation. General Notes for Basin Construction 1. Before any land disturbance such as clearing, or excavation of topsoil or overburden begins in any defined drainage area, all erosion control measures shall be install and fully functional. Clear only what is necessary to install erosion control measures. 2. Site Preparation: Site preparation should begin with stripping all vegetation, root -zone, and all other soft or unsuitable material from the proposed areas. Stripping depths will vary depending on the time of the year. During the wet seasons stripping may be deeper due to saturated soils on the surface. 3. Proofrolling: Following stripping and rough excavation, but prim to placing controlled fill, the exposed subgtades should be proofrolled. Unstable areas identified by proofrolling should be undercut to firth materials. Any undercut areas should be backfilled with controlled fill. Appropriate equipment shall be a dump truck having a single rear axle with axle weight of at least 10 tons, or a dump truck having a tandem rear axle weight of at least 20 tons. Alternate equipment, such as a fully loaded pan scraper, may be utilized with approval of the goo -technical engineer responsible for evaluating the subgrade during construction. Proof -rolling shall consist of driving the appropriate equipment over the sulxgade at awalJzaagpacc. ime a1ra4L make overlapping passes across the subgrade in the same direction, with the overlap not exceeding %2 the width of the equipment. A second set of overlapping passes shall then be made in a direction perpendicular to the first set of passes. 4. Soil Classification: Controlled fill should be soil that has less than 5 percent fibrous organic content and a liquid limit and plasticity index less than 50 and 20, respectively. Soils with Unified Soil Classification System group symbols of Sp, SW, SM, SC, and ML are suitable for use as controlled fill. Soils with USCS grcup symbol of CL which meet the restrictions for liquid limit and plasticity index are also suitable for use as controlled fill. Soils with a higher liquid limit or plasticity index should not be used as controlled fill. Controlled fill should be placed in lifts and then compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density obtained in accordance with ASTM Specification D-698, Standard Proctor Method. S. Perimeter/Mine Roads: Roads constructed for the operation of the mine shall he kept inside the areas that drain to a sediment basin or back to the mine floor. Roads shall also have a high wall barricade at any point where the road is adjacent to the mine pit, See detail on Sheet C-7. 6. Corrugated Metal Pipe(CMP): Corrugated metal pipe shall be standard corrugated steel pipe meeting AASHTO M-274, Minimum thickness shall be 16 gauge or thicker. 7. Joints: Joints shall be water tight band angle connectors, interior Range connectors or oval lug connectors with o-ring or sleeve gaskets. 8. Corrugated Plastic Pipe(CPP) Slope Drains: Corrugated plastic pipe shall be manufactured from high density polyethylene material. Pipe shall be type "C", (corrugated inside and outside). Pipe shall be joined by a standard coupler as manufactured by ADS or equal. 0x Slope Keyed in 12' min. crass RIP -RAP SECTION 88 NC DOT CLASS 11 FABRIC RIP -RAP PIPE OP OUTLET PROTECTION NO SCALE EROSION CONTROL MEASURES The site will be protected by sediment fence, with temporary diversion ditches and sediment basins to direct and treat runoff. All pipes and structures will need to be protected by inlet and outlet protection as specified in these plans. Erosion Control will be accomplished by placing erosion control basins (Skimmer or Riser) at the natural outlet of each drainage area. Run-off will be directed to each basin by ditches and conveyed down the basin walls by ditches or slope drains. There are six drainage areas defined by this plan. As the mining operation progresses down, the mine pit will be lower than the natural outlets and sediment basins. Runoff will be made to flow to the pit floor and be pumped out. Areas outside the six drainage areas are too steep to construct sediment trapping devices. These areas will remain undisturbed until the mine floor is lower than the natural grade of these areas. As disturbance occurs, all runoff will be directed toward the interior mine floor. Erosion Control Measure Maintenance GENERAL MAINTENANCE: Apply to all measures; Inspect the measure weekly and after every 1/2" or greater rainfall event and promptly make necessary repairs to restore the function of the measure. CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCE: Maintain the gravel pad in a condition to prevent mud or sediment from leaving the construction site. This may require periodic top-d essing with 2" stone. Immediately remove all objectionable materials spilled, washed or tracked onto public roadways. SEDIMENT FENCE: Should the fabric of the fence collapse, tear, decompose or become ineffective, replace it promptly. Remove sediment deposits as necessary to provide adequate storage volume for the next rain and to reduce pressure on the fence.Take rare not to undermine the fence during the clean -out. Remove all fencing materials and unstable sediment deposits and bring the area up to grade and stabilize it after the contributing drainage area has been properly stabilized. DIVERSION BERMS : Remove sediment from the flow area and repair the diversion ridge. Carefully check outlets and make timely repairs as needed. When the area protected is permanently stabalized, remove the ridge and the channel to blend with the natural ground level and appropriately stabilized it. RIP -RAP OUTLET PROTECTION/PLUNGE POOLS: Inspect rip -rap outlet structures and plunge pools weekly and after significant (}' or greater) rainfall events. Check for erosion around or below the riprap outlet or if stones have been dislodged, immediately make any repairs to prevent further damage. NOTES: 1. Mine is quarried in a top down and outward manner, with the overburden removal progressing in stages as the mine expands outward. All run-off will be internal to the mine floor. 2. As mining progresses down, run-off will be lower than the topsoil and overburden being removed so run-off flows toward the internal mine pit. 3. Water from the pit floor must be pumped to control the water levels. 4. High Wall Barricade shall consist of large boulders with a minimum dimension of 4' and shall be placed with a maximum of a 4' space between. Thus allowing water run-off to the mine pit and the prevention of inadvertent vehicular entry. Earthen Berm Barricade optional where considered feasible for mining operations but shall not impede water run-off to the pit floor. Pull the skimmer to one side so that the sediment underneath can be excavated. Excavate the sediment from the entire basin, not just the skimmer or the first cell. Make sure vegetation growing in the bottom of the basin does not hold down the skimmer. Repair the baffles if they are damaged. Re -anchor the baffles if water is flowing underneath or around them. If the skimmer is clogged with trash and there is water in the basin, usually jerking the rope will make the skimmer bob up and down to dislodge the debris and restore the flow. If this does not work, pull the skimmer over to the side of the basin and remove the debris. Also check inside the orifice to see if it is clogged, if so remove the debris. If the skimmer arm or barrel pipe is dogged, the orifice can be removed and the obstruction cleared with a plumbers snake or by flushing with water. Be sure to replace the orifice before repositioning the skimmer. Check the fabric lined spillway for damage and make any required repairs with fabric that spans the full width of the spillway. Check the embankment, spillways and outlet for erosion damage, and inspect the embankment for piping and settlement. Make all necessary repairs immediately. Remove all trash and debris from the skimmer and pool areas. Freezing weather can result in ice forming in the basin. Some special precautions should be taken in the winter to prevent the skimmer from plugging with ice. Check the Riser structure for damage, erosion, piping, and rock displacement weekly and after each significant (1/2" or greater) rainstorm and repair immediately. When approved for removal by the local erosion control officer, remove the structure and any unstable sediment after the site has been permanently stabilized. Smooth the basin site to blend with the surrounding area and stabilize. All water and sediment should be removed from the basin prior to dam removal. Sediment should be placed in designated disposal areas and not allowed to flow into streams or drainage ways during structure removal. SLOPE DRAINS: Inspect the slope drain and supporting diversions after every rainfall, and promptly make any necessary repairs.
