Please accept this email as written comments on behalf of Jones County and the County
Commissioners on the Scott Farm Road Sand Mine.
As I mentioned in the Public Hearing, we are very thankful for the Division in their efforts to
hold this hearing so those with concerns can be heard.
The main concern of the County is the impact on our newly constructed Water Treatment
Plant and its associated Wells. You can reference Tyndall Lewis's comments to see how
detrimental this could be on our system. The total cost is just over $11 Million. The wells are
less than half a mile from the proposed sand mine.
If we lose the ability to use this new plant and wells, we will be seeking some sort of monetary
remedy if the cause is proven to be the dewatering associated with the Scott Farm Sand Mine.
Also, we have concerns on the impact of any private wells in the area. As I mentioned before,
the County Water system has only been in this area for the past 10 years. Many of these
homes have been built well before the water system was offered so they would have private
wells.
Another concern is the impact to the privately held Scott Farm Road and the citizens that use it
as their main right of way to their homes most of which are past the location of the proposed
Sand Mine. Something needs to be in place to ensure there is a maintenance plan and traffic
flow plan so these citizens don't end up with an unsuitable road while the sand mine is
operational and after its no longer used.
Sincerely,
Franky J. Howard
