Michael Regan, Secretary DEQ,
To the elected officials, please see my message to the DEQ as an indication of my opposition
against the quarry, and please send a message to the DEQ making your opposition against
the quarry known, as well
On top of this being a great resource for folks of the triangle (it is one of my favorite spots to
walk, ride, etc. with my family, friends and visitors) there are a few key reasons that I believe
you should deny Wake Stone Corp's application for a new rock mine (Permit 92-10) due to
the negative impacts on Umstead State Park, Crabtree Creek, the East Coast Greenway,
recreation in the Old Reedy Creek Corridor and the three adjacent homeowners. I moved
from the North East to enjoy the "green-ness" of the triangle and efforts like this to prioritize
profit over environment are not the proper direction that I believe NC should prioritize.
Few additional key reasons for my feedback:
- Recreation areas greenways should have a 250ft undisturbed buffer (old Reedy Creek
Road) to maintain the greenway experience. No berms or walls within that buffer zone.
- RDU Airport Authority was offered a fair deal to conserve the property by the Conservation
Fund and should reconsider that offer in light of the public benefits it would provide
- There is precious little undeveloped green space left in the Triangle area; it should be
treasured and protected rather than destroyed.
- Concerns about air pollution from quarry mining operations can further negatively impact the
visitors of Umstead State Park per year for the next 25+ years if a new quarry is at work.
