Bartos �` Deputy State Historic Pre rvation Officer SUBJECT: Speight Pit Mine, located off of Hugo Road approximately 5. 3 miles northwest of Grifton, Lenoir County, ER 24-1305 Thank you for giving us the opportunity to review and comment on the above project pursuant to Chapter 74, Article 7 of the North Carolina General Statutes. Because of the location and topographic situation of the proposed project area, it is unlikely that any archaeological sites which may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places will be affected by the proposed borrowing. We, therefore, recommend that no archaeological investigation be conducted in connection with this project. While we note that this project review is only for a state permit, the potential for federal permits may require further consultation with us and compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
