James Izzell From: Parr, Adam <adam.parr@ncdenr.gov> Sent: Thursday, May 13, 2021 4:27 PM To: Tim Newsome <TimN@crmpinc.com> Subject: [EXTERNAL]FW: 08-22 - ADI_Response Here is the email with the comments provided by DWR. If you can address the following by next Wednesday I'll see if we can get this wrapped up without sending another ADI letter. • How are you addressing areas B and C? • Why aren't the wells addressed in the OM plan? Thanks, Adam Parr CAROLINA GEOLOGICAL SERVICES, INC May 14, 2021 Mr. Adam Parr NCDEQ 1612 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1612 Subject: Modification, Bent River Mine, Permit# 08-22 Dear Mr. Parr; I am writing in response to your recent questions to Mr. Tim Newsome regarding the above referenced modification. You have asked, "How are you addressing areas B and C?", and "Why weren't the wells addressed in the OM Plan?". Areas B and C will be pumped and dewatered in accordance with the permit conditions. It is anticipated that water from B and C will be pumped into the previously mined areas (area A) and held there until discharge is needed. Water will then be pumped from Area A into the Roanoke River, in accordance with this modification request. The wells were not addressed because they have never actually been functional. They were installed by a previous property owner to potentially use to fill duck impoundment ponds, but were never completed, and have never been in use. Pumps have never been installed, and there is no electrical power to operate them. We are not sure why they were shown on the original plan, but for all practical purposes, they have never actually existed. Any dewatering or discharge of water will have no impact on the wells, because they have never been in use, nor will they ever be used. We appreciate the opportunity to address these questions with you. Please let us know if you need any additional information. Sincerely, James Izzell Carolina Geological Services, Inc.
