This modification request is simply to change the Mining Permit to allow discharge of fresh water. The current mining permit specifically prohibits any discharge of fresh water in Operating Conditions 4-C and 4-D. With the recent excessive rain in North Carolina, it has become difficult to operate without the ability to discharge some fresh water. Water will be pumped from the mining area into "ponds", which are previous mining areas. Any sediment from the mining area settles in these ponds, and any water discharged will be clear. Application will be made concurrently for NPDES General Stormwater Permit for Mining NCG020. Any water discharged will be done in compliance with standards in this permit. Water will be discharged into Roanoke River by a pipe. There are no other changes to the mine plan or permit requested. The site plan is unchanged from the current approved plan with the exception of adding the "discharge point". Please let me know if you need any additional information. Sincerely, James Izzell Carolina Geological Services, Inc. RECEIVED enclosures FEB 2 4 2021 LAND QUALITY MINING PROGRAM PO Box 429, GARNER, NC 27529
