Thanks for taking my call to discuss the request for additional information regarding dewatering for the referenced mining permit application. As we discussed, Mr.Thomas will use standard wet mining methods to excavate the borrow material. The following is a summary of the typical wet mining procedure that Mr. Thomas plans on using for the proposed mine: • Above groundwater table: o excavate material o place material in stockpile o load material and haul offsite • Below groundwater table: o excavate material o allow groundwater to free drain from excavator bucket o place material in stockpile o allow remaining groundwater to free drain from stockpile. Stockpile area will be sloped to surface drain into existing excavation. Additionally, water may drain through the surficial soil into the groundwater table o when sufficiently dried for transporting, load material and haul offsite As we discussed, wet mining is the typical method used for mining shallow surface materials in eastern North Carolina. There will be no dewatering or external discharge of groundwater from the excavation in the proposed mine. We request that this minor clarification not delay the processing of Mr. Thomas' application any further. If there are additional questions regarding the wet mining proposed for Mr. Thomas' mine, please contact me. Thanks. R. S.
