Thank you for hearing the comments from the Harnett County Community of Fletcher Tutor Rd and the surrounding
area last night 12/19/23.I wanted to send along my comments in written form so you all would have them as well.
They are as follows:
Good Evening I am David Sears and I am a resident of Fletcher Tutor Rd.representing our community.
All of my comments will be in reference to Article 7 of the Mining Act of 1971,Section 51 Letter D.
Section 51 #2.
There are many residents with well water along Fletcher Tutor Rd.and proximity of the quarry in the Duncan
community. There is concern of the longevity of our water supply and the cleanliness of our water which we
depend on daily.
Runoff in our freshwater streams and nearby lakes such as Shearon Harris which is over 4,000 acres in the Upper
Cape Fear River basin and is less than 2 miles from the proposed new quarry.
Section 51 #3.
The citizens of Fletcher Tutor Rd and surrounding areas are concerned about the safety of our air quality. Many
articles are written on lung function and respiratory health with citizens close to a quarry site.
Dust or dangerous crystalline silica exposure is real and there are many citizens in our neighborhood with existing
conditions such as COPD,Asthma, and heart conditions that would be worsened with a new quarry of this
magnitude.
The dust or crystalline silica that will come from approximately 200 dump trucks per day on Fletcher Tutor Rd will
be within just a few feet of our houses. The American Lung Association warns against Silicosis for residents living
in close proximity to a quarry site and exposed to this dust.
Section 51 #4.
Northwest Harnett Elementary School which opened in the fall of 2023 and houses 900 students is only 2 miles
from the center of the quarry,we do not want our kids exposed to the dangers of this quarry.
We have been told by Martin Marrietta that there will be 200 dump trucks each day on our street.
The community is concerned about the public safety of our neighborhood pertaining to pedestrians that are
frequently found walking for health reasons and Dr.'s orders.
There are at least 3 school buses that must back up and turn around on Fletcher Tutor not to mention the numerous
school buses that come by on NC 42 where 200 dump trucks will exit daily.
I have personally experienced physical damage to my property from the blasting of Martin Marietta.I currently have
cracks in my foundation.I have had a French door glass shattered as well as pictures shaken from the walls of our
homes.
There have been issues of livestock breaking out of their fences when blasting is taking place.Pets are scared as if a
thunderstorm is coming up even on a bright sunny day.
Section 51 #6.
Martin Marietta Materials has been fined over$3MM dollars in environmental violations nationwide per Good Jobs
First Violations tracker.
We are very concerned as a community about environmental impacts not if they happen but when they happen to
our communities which will impact our children and grandchildren for years to come.
The existing quarry has been a nuisance for the community of Fletcher Tutor Rd and surrounding communities for
years.
Harnett County landowners on Fletcher Tutor Rd and surrounding areas'due process rights were violated by the
applicant and the Wake County Board's failure to provide adequate notice of this new quarry and the hearing that
took place over a year ago.The impacts to our community in Harnett County will be detrimental and we were left
outside of the approval process.
Please consider stopping this new quarry to preserve our community and the lives we live in Northwest Harnett
County.
