Dear Ms Barrett
As the owners of 510 Emerald Drive, we would like to object to the
proposed building of a 200 ft dock and 20ft by 20ft roofed pier/boat
lift at 508 Emerald Drive.
Our objections are three fold, and jeopardize the three
overriding reasons we purchased our house in the first place. These
reasons are:
1 Free, unobstructed access to the sound for wind surfing.
2 The unique character of the sound off our shore that
provides an open, safe , shallow body of water for childrens
and adult water activities.
3 The panoramic view of the sound.
1 This house is a wind surfing retreat for us. We purchased it
because of the unobstructed access to the water for sailing.
Access to our house from the sound by wind surfer
will be seriously restricted by the proximity and length of
this structure.
There will be many days when we will no longer be able to
sail to our house.
2 The deep channel sweeps away from the shore in this section of
the sound, leaving a beautifully safe, shallow body of water. This is
ideal for learning to windsurf, sailing in for a rest, adjusting gear
when necessary, practicing tricky maneuvers when one falls a lot
and so on. The proposed dock not only halves the area we use, it
bisect this area so close to us that many of the activities we currently
enjoy will be seriously curtailed. Children will no longer be able to
use it for learning to sail. There just will no longer be enough room
to maneuver, and on many tacks our" landing pad area"will be
inaccessible to us. This dock will destroy the wonderful open,
shallow, safe body of water we chose and cherish. We already are
hemmed in by the dock four doors down. We feel the proposed dock
will seriously restrict our access to, and enjoyment of the water.
3 Our house is unique in that it sits very close to the sound, and
enjoys a panoramic view in consequence. When we purchased it the
house was in extremely poor condition. Most contractors
recommended demolishing it and starting over. This would have
required moving the house site back away from the sound. We
chose instead to spend far more, and renovate the current structure
in order to keep our fantastic view. We were not anticipating the
sound turning into a wharf. A twenty foot by twenty foot roofed
structure on the end of a 200 ft dock will certainly intrude on the
openness and tranquillity of the scene. The situation will be even
worse for the poor owners of the house adjacent to the proposed
structure on the other side... they will be trapped between two of
these monster docks.
We realize that the Smiths want access to the sound for a large
boat... could they not come to some arrangement with the owners of
the existing dock to moor their boat there? This dock is currently
used extremely rarely, if ever.
We are sorry to be so negative about a neighbors proposal, but
our family and our renters feel very strongly that access to our
house by sail from the water, and our enjoyment of the sound and
our house will be seriously affected by this structure.
Yours sincerely
