General: The work covered by this specification consists of furnishing all plant, labor, equipment and material, and performing all work in connection with the complete construction and installation of N. C. Aquarium Floating Dock in strict accordance with these specifications and drawings and subject to the terms and conditions of the construction contract. The project shall include providing all required materials and providing complete assembly and installation of the floating dock and gangway as shown on the plans. The major items of work to be furnished and/or installed are briefly described as follows: 1. Construct, deliver, and install one 6' x 26' floating wolkwav with wooden decking 2. Construct, deliver, and install one 6' x 10' floating walkwa; with wooden decking 3. Construct, deliver, and install one 4' x 15' aluminum gangway 4. Provide and install four 8"diameter piles located as shown on the plans 5. Relocate two existing piles as shown on the plans 6. Provide required structural support to existing dock for new gangway All quantities are to be considered approximate and the contractor should verify quantity needs based on pion layout and site conditions. b. Order of Construction: 1. Contractor shall construct items o.1, a.2,ond a.3 indicated above. 2. Contractor shall deliver items a.1, o.2, a.3, and o.4 to the project site along with all materials necessary for complete instol-otion 3. Contractor shall install piles in item a.4, relocate piles in item a.5, and provide structural connection for the gangway to the existing dock. 4. Contractor shall complete all on -site assembly of, and installation of items o.1, o.2, and a.3 5. Contractor shall clean site of any unused materials or other construction related debris and remove and properly dispose of off of Owner's property C. Record Drawings: The Contractor shall keep a complete and up to date record in red pencil of any and all changes made during construction on one set of plans and specifications. At the completion of the work, the Contractor shall furnish Record Drawings indicating the final location of all structures, etc. The Record Drawings shall also show the size and elevation of all structures. Copy shall be turned over to owner prior to final payment. d. Relocation and Replacement of Existing Facilities: Existing structures or features in conflict with installation of any portion of the contract work shall be temporarily removed and relocated during construction operations. Damage to structures or features from failure to relocate shall be the responsibility of the Contractor and shall be repaired or replaced at the Contractor's expense. Following construction completion, all relocated structures and fwnti'rug Shall be returneded to their original position and replaced in an equal or superior condition than previously existing. 2 - SITE INFORMATION a. Location and Construction Limits: The Contractor shall confine his construction operations within the property of N. C . Aquariums Off- loading of the delivered materials may be accomplished in the staff parking area on the east end of the Aquarium building. Heavy vehicle traffic is not allowed along the access road to the dock site. Because of the traffic limits of the access road, the contractor may arrange, at his own expense, for off-loading and assembly of delivered materials at a nearby site and deliver the assembled dock to the project site by water. The Contractor shall be responsible for the preservation and protection of property adjacent to the work site against damage or injury as a result of his operations under this Contract. Any damage or injury occurring on account of any act, omission, or neglect on the part of the Contractor shall be restored in a proper and satisfactory rnonner or replaced by and at the expense of the Contractor to an equal or superior condition than previously existed. In the event of any claims for damage or alleged damage to property as a result of work under this contract, the Contractor shall be responsible for all costs in connection with the settlement of cr defense against such claims. Prior to commencement of work in the vicinity of property adjacent to the work site, the Contractor, at his own expense, shall take such surveys as may be necessary to establish the existing condition of the property. Before final payment can be made, the Contractor shall furnish satisfactory evidence that all claims for damage have been legally settled or sufficient funds to cover such claims have been placed in escrow, or that an adequate bond to cover such claims has been obtained. b. Existing Utilities and Structures: The term existing utilities and structures shall be deemed to refer to both publicly -owned and privately -owned utilities such as electric power and lighting, telephone, water, gas, storm droins, and sanitary sewers, and all appurtenant structures. Where existing utilities and structures are indicated on the drawings, it shall be understood that all of the existing utilities and structures affecting the work may not be shown and that the locations of those shown are approximate only. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to ascertain the actual extent and exact location of existing utilities and structures. In every instance, the Contractor shall notify the proper authority having jurisdiction and obtain all necessary directions and approvals before performing any work in the vicinity of existing utilities. The work shall be carried out in a manner to limit disruption of normal Aquarium activities and to avoid damage to the existing facilities. Any damage resulting from the work of this Contract shall be promptly repaired by the Contractor at his own expense in a manner approved by the Engineer and further subject to the requirements of 3 any authority having jurisdiction. Where it is required by the o authority having jurisdiction that they perform their own repoirs or have them done by others, the Contractor shall be responsible for M all costs thereof. N Where operations by the Contractor require any utilitity or structure to be temporarily supported or otherwise protected during the N construction work, such support and protection shall be provided by the Contractor. All such work shall be performed in a manner satisfactory to the Engineer and the respective authority having W jurisdiction over such work. In the event the Contractor foils to provide proper support or protection to any existing utility or W structure, the Engineer may, at his discretion, have the respective o authority provide such support or protection as may be necessary to T insure the safety of such utility or structure; and the costs of such measures shall be paid by the Contractor. c. Interference with Operations: The Contractor shall execute the work to cause minimum interference with normal Aquarium operations. The intent is for the Aquarium to remain fully operational while work is being performed. The final connection of the new fire line shall not be accomplished until all aspects of the new system have been completed, tested, and approved for operation by the Engineer and governing state agencies. d. Facilities Location Stake -Out: The Contractor will be responsible for construction stake -out of all proposed facilities. The intent of the drawings is to provide location sufficient to establish the positional relationship of the facilities. e. Disposition of Nonsolvageable Materials: All nonsolvageable or un sable material shall be disposed of off of the Owner's property as directed by the Owner. All waste material generated by any wok under this contract shall be handled, transported, stored and di osed of off the Owner's property, by the Contractor, in ac ordonce with all applicable federal, state, or local laws, or finances, regulations, court orders, or other types of rules or rul gs having the effect of law. 9. Disposition of Salvageable Materials: The Contractor shall be required to furnish an itemized listing of materials to be salvaged to the Owner. h. Parking Constraints: All contractor vehicles shall be porked in areas designated by the Owner. All vehicles operated by the contractor or subcontractors shall have a visible identification showing name of represented company. 3. MATERIALS a Minimum Design Loads: Every structure shall be of sufficient strength to support the imposed dead load, live load, wind and impact loads without exceeding the allowable stresses prescribed for the various materials. Adequate consideration shall be mode for forces imposed by earth, wind, water, docking, and mooring. Design Live Loads shall be 20 psf or 300 Ibs concentrated on any 2 ft. square. Under dead loads, floating docks shall have a minimum of 15 inches of freeboard. The dock shall have not more than 6 degrees of tilt from the horizontal under uniform live loading on one-half of the dock width or under concentrated load of 600 lbs. applied on any side. b. Wood: All wood decking, beams, bracing, and supports shall be grade #1 or better SYP and shall be pressure treated to 0.6 PCF retention with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and shall be treated in accordance with AWPA C1 and C18. All lumber shall be Kiln dried after treatment to a moisture content of not greater than 19 percent. All lumber shall be sound, well seasoned, straight grained, free from shakes and large or loose knots and shall have no defects which will impair its strength or durability for the purpose intended. All lumber to be surfaced four sides. Wood decking surfaces shall be installed with o maximum opening of 1/4". c. Pilings: Timber pilings shall be 8" in diameter and shall conform to ASTM D25. Timber pilings shall be pressure treated in accordance with AA C1, C3, and C18 and AWPB MP-1. Pile guides shall be 10" "Follansbee" Hop Roller Pile Holders or approved equal. Pilings shall be installed to a minirnum of 12 ft. below the sound floor and shall be trimmed, after installation to a height of 3 ft. above the dock surface at normal high tide. I d. I lootation: Flootation units shall be designed to maintain the desired buoyancy and freeboard if punctured or cracked. Floatation attachment shall be by molded flange around entire perimeter of unit and shall be positively attached to structural frame. Floatation shell shall be high strength, high density, polyethylene. Floatation core shall be expanded polystyrene, factory pre -molded to ensure complete expansion to a minimum of 1.0 pcf density. e. Metal Components: 1. All structural steel components shall be manufactured from ASTM A 36 grade steel. All hardware components, bolts, nuts, and washers shall be manufactured according to ASTM A 307 and shall be comparable in size and shape with "Follansbee" Heavy Duty Wood Dock Hardware. All structural steel, fasteners, bolts, nuts and washers shall be hot dipped galvanized in accordance with ASTM A 123 with a minimum applied coating of 2 ounces per square ft. 2. Cleats shall be 10" malleable cost iron in accordance with ASTM A 47. f. Bumpers and Rubrails: Dock bumpers and rubroils shall be non -marring white or beige extruded vinyl, and shall meet or exceed the following: Durometer Hardness of 89 Specific Gravity of 1.368 Brittlely Temperature of -20F END SECTION 01010 SECTION 01017 SITE MAINTENANCE AND CLEAN UP 1. PERIODIC CLEANUP During construction, the Contractor shall regularly remove from the site of the work all accumulated debris and surplus materials of any kind which result from his operations. Unused equipment and tools shall be stored at the Contractor's yord or base of operations for the project. 2. FINAL CLEAN-UP Before finally leaving the site, the Contractor shall remove from the site of the work all accumulated debris and surplus materials of any kind which result from the construction operations, including construction equipment, tools, sheds, sanitary enclosures, etc. The completed project shall be turned over to the Owner in a neat and orderly condition. The site of the work shall be rehabilitated or developed in accordance with other sections of the specifications an d the drawings. In the absence of any portion of these requirements, the Contractor shall completely rehabilitate the site to a condition and appearance equal or superior to that which existed ju$t prior to construction, except for those items whose permanent removal or relocation was required in the Contract Documents or order by the Owner. END SECTION 01017 SECTION 1040 COORDINATION 1. GENERAL Coordinate activities included in various Sections to assure efficient and orderly installation of each component. Coordinate operations included under different Sections that are dependent on each other for proper installation and operation. Where installation of one component depends on installation of other components before or after its own installation, schedule activities in the sequence required to obtain the best results. Where space is limited, coordinate installation of different components to assure maximum accessibility for maintenance, service and repair. a. Administrative: Coordinate scheduling and timing of administrative procedures with other activities to avoid conflicts and ensure orderly progress. b. Inspection of Conditions: The Installer of each component shall inspect the substrate and conditions under which Work is performed. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. c. Manufacturer's Instructions: Comply with manufacturer's installation instructions and recommendations, to the extent that they are more stringent than requirements in Contract Documents. d. Inspections: Inspect materials immediately upon delivery and again prior to installation. Reject damaged and defective items. e. Provide attachment and connection devices and methods necessary for securing each construction element. Secure each construction element true to line and level. f. Install each component during weather conditions and project status that will ensure the best results.lsolate each part from incompatible material as necessary to prevent deterioration. g. Cleaning and Protection: During handling and installation, clean and protect construction in progress and adjoining materials in place. Apply protective covering where required to ensure protection from damage or deterioration. Clean and maintain completed construction as often as necessary through the construction period. Adjust and lubricate operable components to ensure operability without domaging effects. 2. WORK SCHEDULE a. Work Hours: Unless otherwise specifically permitted, no work shall be done between the hours of 6 00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., nor on Saturdays and Sundays, except as necessary for the proper core and protection of work already performed. The Contractor's bid shall be based upon these restricted work hours. If it shall become imperative to perform work at night, the Owner shall be informed a reasonable time in advance of the beginning of such work. Temporary lighting and all other necessary facilities for performing and inspecting the work shall be provided and maintained by the Contractor. b. Storting Work: The Contractor shall notify Owner one week in advance of locating equipment or materials at the site. The Contractor shall notify the N. C. Aquarium staff (919) 247-4004 48 hours prior to commencing site work. All safety considerations must be in place and approved by the owner prior to beginning construction. 3. WEATHER CONDITIONS No work shall be done when the weather is unsuitable . The Contractor shall take necessary precautions (in the event of impending storms to protect all work, materials, or equipment from damage or deterioration due to floods, driving rain, or wind and snow storms. The Owner reserves the right to order that additional protection measures, beyond those proposed by the Contract, be taken to safeguard all components of the project. The Contractor shall not claim any compensation for such precautionary measures so ordered, nor claim any compensation from the Owner for damage to the work from weather conditions. The Bidder shop prepare his bid with the understanding that unsuitable weather may cause all work to be stopped- however, an extension of the contract period. will not be permitted due to unsuitable weather. 4. USE OF FACILITIES BEFORE COMPLETION The Owner reserves the right to use any portion of the constructed facilities before final completion of the whole work to be done under this Contract. However, only those portions of the facilities which hove been completed to the Engineer's satisfaction, as evidenced by his issuing a Certificate of Substantial Completion covering that port of the work, shall be placed in service. It shall be the Owner's responsibility to prevent premature connections to or use of any portion of the installed facilities by private or public parties, persons or groups of persons, before the Engineer issues his Certificate of Substantial Completion covering that portion of the work to be placed in service. END OF SECTION 01040 SECTION 01300 SUBMITTALS The Contractor is required to file submittals with the Engineer for materials to be used in the work and as designated elsewhere in these specifications. All required submittals are of a type and description as follows: a. Shop Drawings include, but are not limited to, layout drawings in plan and elevation, installation drawings, construction drawings, manufacturer's data, etc. Contractor shall be responsible for securing all of the information, details, dimensions, drawings, etc. necessary to prepare the shop drawings required under this Contract and to fulfill all other requirements of this Contract. Shop drawings shall, at minimum, accurately and clearly present the following information: 1. All working and installation dimensions. 2. Arrangement and sectional views. 3. Units of equipment in the proposed positions for installation, details of required attachments and connections, and dimensioned locations between units and in relation to the structures. 4. Necessary details and information for making connections between the various trades including, but not limited to, power supplies and interconnection wiring between units, accessories, appurtenances, etc. b. Catalog Cut is the manufacturer's description, specifications, and sketches of the material being used. The catalog cut shall contain sufficient information to determine compliance of the material with this specification and referenced specifications. END SECTION 01300 SECTION 01500 CONSTRUCTION FACILITIES AND TEMPORARY CONTROLS The Contractor shall comply with industry standards and applicable lows and regulations of authorities having jurisdiction including, but not limited to, the following: 1. State and Local building codes 2. Health and Safety regulations 3. Utility Company regulations 4. Police, Fire, and Rescue Squad regulations 5.
