Marine mattress and armor stone (Size B) installation operations were being conducted today on the terminal groin. CDC was observed laying eighteen (18) marine mattresses and placing Size B armor stone on top of the in - place mattresses between Sta. 4+10 and Sta. 4+60. 2. Marine mattress filling operations were being conducted today at the north end of Shallotte Blvd (See Photo #9 & 10). 3. Armor stones (Size B) were observed being delivered to the project site via flatbed tractor trailer from the Rockingham Vulcan quarry. All stones visually appeared within the size range for the Size B stone. 4. CDC provided survey check data for the cross -sections at Sta. 4+00 through Sta. 4+60 indicating that the marine mattresses were installed to grade. 5. The On -site Observer noticed several stone fragments lying next to the terminal groin and informed Richard Mattingly (CDC). Richard stated that the fragments would be removed and placed up at the stockpile area for disposal at a later date. 6. Adam Sellers (016) was observed on -site today, checking on the progress of the terminal groin construction. 7. During the removal of a marine mattress from the truck and prior to placement, the filter fabric on the bottom of the mattress caught on something and was partially pulled off. The CDC crew placed it back on the truck and re- attached the filter fabric to the bottom of the marine mattress. Once the fabric was re -attached the mattress was placed in the water (See Photo #7). 8. The On -site Observer saw the bucket being removed from the yellow Komat'su excavator. The bucket was being replaced with a shackle to hold the spreader bar for placing marine mattresses. 9. The On -site Observer observed the bulldozer being used to move sand landward that had built up on the west side of the groin (See Photo #5). Richard Mattingly (CDC) stated that the tonnage being delivered from the quarry had gotten better but more stone is needed to be delivered per day. Jim Gunn (CDC) informed the On -site Observer today he spoke with Walter Crabtree (Vulcan) that they will be bumping the number of trucks making deliveries from 8 to 14 so that with each truck making two trips per day, the number of loads per day will increase from 16 to 28 loads, increasing the tonnage being delivered to 450-500 tons/day. The project has on average received approx. 200 tons/day in stone deliveries. Jim also stated that another excavator is being brought to the quarry to assist the one excavator that CDC purchased a strain gauge for so that the excavator can measure the weight of each stone that it picks up and cut down weighing process time. The new excavator being delivered would assist in loading trucks once the stones have been weighed. Richard Mattingly (CDC) indicated that the 4th excavator on -site will be receiving a new bucket on Thursday/Friday, after which point it will be used to assist with the armor stone placement and marine mattress laying operations. 4. Jim Gunn (CDC) stated that they plan on bringing a strobe -mounted ATV to the site so that a CDC crew member could drive down to the intersection of 4th Street and Shallotte Blvd to assist the trucks delivering armor stone unstrapping the stone in preparation for unloading. Were any issues identified today which may result in a field adjustment report, contract modification, request for interpretation, or noncompliance? If so, describe: 1.
