Potential bird habitat by itself would not result in an automatic closure. We would potentially like to add a sampling station there...is there a readily available map of the SAV wavebreak structure? thanks Shannon Jenkins Section Chief, Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality Division of Marine Fisheries North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality 252-808-8148 Office shannon.ienkins(a.ncdenr.gov PO Box 769 Morehead City, NC 28557 —"Nothing Compares— Email correspondence to and from this address is subject to the North Carolina Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties. Sorry you could not join us. It was a great visit and it is an impressive structure. We have a couple of questions to follow up on. I realize that you may not be able to answer some of these questions and as such I have cc'ed some additional staff with NCDMF. • Upon completion will the structure or area receive any special designation by the state as a artificial reef, fish haven, or fish habitat? • Will there be any buffers or closures for navigation around the structure? Based on our field observations of significant prop scars in seagrass beds, the structure is likely to have some adverse impacts to seagrass via increased activity in the adjacent waters. If there are no closures, perhaps a navigational fairway should be discussed. • Will significant habitat utilization by birds require any closure of waters for shellfishing (i.e., shellfish sanitation water quality monitoring)? We look forward to following the project and hope to see some oyster recruitment this summer! -Ken Kenneth Riley, Ph.D. Habitat Conservation Division National Marine Fisheries Service Southeast Region 101 Fivers Island Road, Beaufort,NC 28516 Office: 252-728-875o I Cell: 252-864-649q I Email:ken.riley0noaa.gov On Sun, Mar 5, 2017 at 9:00 PM, Paugh, Leilani Y <lpaugh@ncdot.gov> wrote: Looks like tomorrow will be cool but calm so we will see everyone at 10:00am at the fishing center.
