LeiLani/Ken,
• Will significant habitat utilization by birds require any closure of waters for shellfishing (i.e., shellfish
sanitation water quality monitoring)?
Potential bird habitat by itself would not result in an automatic closure. We would potentially like to add a sampling
station there...is there a readily available map of the SAV wavebreak structure?
thanks

Hi LeiLani,
2
I really appreciate coordination for the trip to visit the Bonner Bridge SAV wavebreak structure. Sorry you
could not join us. It was a great visit and it is an impressive structure. We have a couple of questions to follow
up on. I realize that you may not be able to answer some of these questions and as such I have cc'ed some
additional staff with NCDMF.
• Upon completion will the structure or area receive any special designation by the state as a artificial reef,
fish haven, or fish habitat?
• Will there be any buffers or closures for navigation around the structure? Based on our field
observations of significant prop scars in seagrass beds, the structure is likely to have some adverse
impacts to seagrass via increased activity in the adjacent waters. If there are no closures, perhaps a
navigational fairway should be discussed.
• Will significant habitat utilization by birds require any closure of waters for shellfishing (i.e., shellfish
sanitation water quality monitoring)?
We look forward to following the project and hope to see some oyster recruitment this summer!

HI all
Looks like more people can make it on Monday, March 6th. Let's plan to meet at the fishing center at 10:00.
Please bring your life vest.
We will have to make a call that weekend if the weather turns bad. I will send out an email but you can also
reach me on my cell phone at 919-215-0746.
