PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project sites are located in deep water ranging from approximately 2.5 to 5.7 nautical miles (NM) offshore of Figure 8 Island, Wrightsville Beach, Masonboro Island and Carolina Beach, New Hanover County, within Onslow Bay, Atlantic Ocean. Collectively, the entire sites encompass approximately 608 acres in area. Existing site conditions for each reef are further described below under the proposed project. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean are classified as SB by the NC Division of Water Resources and they are not designated as Primary Nursery Area (PNA) by the NC Division of Marine Fisheries. PROPOSED PROJECT: The applicant is proposing to enhance and expand existing artificial reef sites located offshore of Figure 8 Island, Wrightsville Beach, Masonboro Island and Carolina Beach, New Hanover County, within the Atlantic Ocean. The following are summaries for each site (AR-364, 370, 372, 378 and 378B) starting from the most northern to the most southern reef site, which was transcribed from the MP-1 Supplemental Sheet: AR-364 (Billy Murrell Reef) The applicant states the existing permitted site is approximately 115 acres (5,009,361 square feet) and is -42' feet @ mean lower low water (MLLW). No site expansion is planned for this project (See Project Narrative). Location is approximately 2.5 NM from Mason Inlet and 2.6 NM from Rich Inlet (Project Center 34°14.801N, 77°42.899W) and has no potential discharge possibility. Existing artificial reef material: 52' Tug "Capt. Tom", 480 tons RCP, 55' Landing Craft, 24 Domes and 18 Cubes, 65' Tug "Southern Craft 8", 297' barge HT-290, 65' Tug "Capt. Jerry. How will excavated or fill material be kept on site and erosion controlled? Concrete weights approximately 2.5 times water. Fill material was designed to resist movement after deployment. Weight per unit ranges from 548 Ibs to 2213 lbs. The RCP is common to artificial reef construction and have proved durable and stable and have been used in NC artificial reef enhancements within ocean waters. The new Atlantic Pods are made of the same material as Reef BallsT , a commonly used manufactured artificial reef unit. They are being placed for long term durability and stability as an alternate material due to its lower cost. Buoy is marked with AR #, NC Division of Marine Fisheries, 1- 800.682-2632, and a Sportfish Restoration Funding logo. r /rig. - ?74i Project Name Applicant Na e Applicant Signature J b. What type of construction equipment will be used (e.g., dragline, backhoe, or hydraulic dredge)? TBD. The Atlantic Pods will most likely be lowered to the water and released at or near the waters surface to decrease potential damge. The units then sink straight down and settle on the bottom. RCP is generally deployed with a fork lift and slid off the end of the forks as they are tilled near the water surface. Alternately, RCP can be pushed over the side of a barge with fork lifts. d.
